Our researcher, Lee Ann Powers, attended Certified Local Government (CLG) training last weekend through the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). She is one of five people appointed by the Town of Miami to help the Town create and preserve a historic district, which will provide guidance. This is not a regulatory group, but a group to assist. She says she's excited to bring what she's learned about Miami's historic buildings to help with this process. More about this in the months to come.

Tomorrow is the "soft opening" of the Honor Quilts exhibit here at Bullion Plaza Cultural Center & Museum, celebrating our veterans for our country's 250th anniversary. The exhibit will be open from 10am to 5pm Wed-Sat for the month of June. These are all donated quilts by local quilters, include THREE 4H'ers! We received 16 quilts in all!

Local veteran recipients will be announced at the Grand Opening, to be held during the 2nd Friday Live Music on the Front Lawn event on Friday, June 12, starting at 6pm. At the end of June, the quilts will be moved to be displayed next door in the Bullion Gym for the Cobre Valley Independence Day Celebration Dinner, Thursday, July 2. A small ceremony to present the quilts to our local veteran recipients will be held at 3pm.

We are looking for people to sponsor veteran quilt recipients, so they can have a ticket for the Indendence Day dinner. A donation of $35 will pay for one veteran. Message me or Linda Hale-Merlin to arrange for that. We already have one generous donor!

I will be needing some volunteers to help move the exhibit from the museum to the gym on Wednesday, July 1 (don't have a time yet), and to break the exhibit down after the dinner on July 2.

We unveiled the refurbished veterans memorial at the old stone cottages this morning, on Memorial Day. Our assistant director, Tom Meredith, and volunteer, Pilar Carbajal, worked hard to repair and refurbished this memorial, which across from Bullion Plaza Cultural Center & Museum.

We visited Rob this morning at Mountain Quilting on Broad Street in Globe, to see how some of the quilt donations are going for the Honor Quilts Exhibit coming up here at the museum for the month of June. Rob and Mal volunteer with 4H, and several of the quilts are made by 4H students! We will have a "soft opening" of the Honor Quilts exhibit on Wednesday, June 3, from 10am to 2pm, and then a Grand Opening during our Live Music on the Front Lawn for Second Friday in June on Friday, June 12, from 6-8pm.
