September is International Underground Railroad Month 👏🏾

Did you know Memphis was part of the story of the Underground Railroad?

In a city tied closely to the Mississippi River, slavery, and the cotton economy, there were also people risking everything in pursuit of freedom. The National Park Service identifies Memphis sites such as the Jacob Burkle home, today known as Slave Haven, as places connected to Underground Railroad activity.

I was honored to explore this history with the Turner family, visiting multiple sites across Memphis and learning more about the courage of freedom seekers who refused to let bo***ge be the final chapter of their lives.

Whether you’re a local or just visiting, support the historians and tour guides preserving these stories.

The Memphis YouTube episode is coming soon. 🎥✊🏾

Memphis history hits different when you experience it with people who truly love telling the story.

I had an amazing experience with Heritage Tours Memphis, they explore more than 25 historic sites throughout the city. Their service was top-notch, but what stood out most was their passion for making sure visitors understand the people, places, and stories that shaped .

As the oldest Black history tour company in the country, they’re still going strong and continuing an important legacy of preservation and storytelling.

If Memphis is on your travel list, make sure you book a tour with them.

And stay tuned…there’s plenty more Memphis content coming. ✊🏾
