🧵 Museum History Monday: The Art of Quilting!

Quilts are more than beautiful pieces of fabric. They tell stories of creativity, tradition, craftsmanship, and the generations who came before us.

The Mariposa Museum & History Center is proud to feature a special temporary quilting exhibit created by the Mariposa Parlor of the Native Daughters of the Golden West!

This wonderful display showcases a variety of quilts, traditional patterns, sewing tools, and the history behind this timeless craft.

Throughout history, quilting has served both practical and artistic purposes, bringing families and communities together while passing down skills and traditions from one generation to the next.

🪡 A special thank you to the Mariposa Parlor of the Native Daughters of the Golden West for their time and dedication in creating this exhibit and sharing this important part of our cultural heritage!

🔎 Exhibit Spotlight: Mariposa’s Matuca Clampers

During California’s Gold Rush, E Clampus Vitus chapters brought miners together for fellowship, humor, and help in times of hardship. Members—known as Clampers—assisted fellow miners and cared for the widows and children of those who died. Their playful ceremonies and practical jokes also offered a break from the difficult conditions of mining life.

Today, E Clampus Vitus continues as a fraternal organization dedicated to preserving the history of the American West through historical plaques, monuments, and community support. Our local Matuca Chapter 1849 remains active in Mariposa, with a name representing Mariposa, Tuolumne, and Calaveras counties.

Our museum’s E Clampus Vitus exhibit connects that history with photographs, badges, ribbons, and newspaper clippings. Highlights include the Hornitos Calabozo dedication on May 9, 1954, and photographs from the Mariposa Courthouse Centennial that same year.

You’ll also find photographs of historical markers at Mount Ophir Mine and our own museum. Matuca Chapter 1849 dedicated the museum’s marker on April 7, 2007, recognizing the museum, Golden Key Mine Stamp Mill, Mariposa Gazette Building, and Counts House.
