One of only two homes designed for his personal use, Poplar Forest served as a retreat for Jefferson after his retirement from public service in 1809. Inherited from his father-in-law in 1773, the property was a tobacco plantation housing approximately 94 enslaved men, women, and children throughout Jefferson's life. Today the Corporation for Jefferson's Poplar Forest strives to tell the story of

all who lived and worked at Poplar Forest. Open mid-March through December and weekends only mid-January through mid-March.

Join us as we welcome Thomas Jefferson (Bill Barker), John Adams (Sam Goodyear), and Abigail Adams (Abigail Schumann) in a presentation of “Jefferson & Adams” a stage play written by Howard Ginsburg. Based on the collection of letters between these prolific founding fathers – and one equally astute wife – the play fuses compelling political thoughts with passionate personal beliefs. Jefferson & Adams traces the period from the inception of the Revolution through the politics of two presidents to the wisdom of men who have lived long lives, as well as reveals each of the three as thoughtful, persevering, dedicated, innovative, relevant – and human.
