Metro Art Presents x the Autry After Hours: Versos y Besos with Las Colibrí

On Sunday May 9 at 7pm, join Metro Art Los Angeles, Metro Los Angeles and The Autry for a special Mother’s Day mariachi performance by all-women’s ensemble Las Colibrí which reimagines living archives and women’s history linking poetry, place and sound.

Inspired by archival materials of composer and singer Manuela C. Garcia (1867-1931) who was born and raised downtown near what is now Union Station Los Angeles, the performance features much-loved classic songs of the genre alongside a recovered song and original poetry by Amy Shimshon-Santo.

In this painting, Judith Lowry uses traditional stories to blend environmental and feminist messages, demonstrating the continuing relevance of these narratives to Native peoples today. Her painting depicts the story of Welgatim (Frog-Woman) and her husband Weh-pom (Coyote). After falling in love with Suh-mim (Deer Woman), Weh-pom plots to kill Welgatim. Weh-pom’s disloyalty incites Welgatim to summon rain, flooding the Earth. Welgatim’s power is so great that only fire from Mount Tehama (seen erupting in the background), could stop the flood.

You can see this piece and more as part of When I Remember I See Red. Now on view at the Autry. https://theautry.org/exhibitions/when-i-remember-i-see-red

Hello, if memory serves me, a few days ago I posed a question here in this forum. In reading your newsletter, I saw that your theatre will show on Jul 10th "Once Upon a Time in the West." Altho it also said reservations encouraged or words to that effect, I searched and found no place to make the reservation. I suspect I'm not the only one who wants to know this answer. Thank you
Good Day, I am on your n/l email list and rec'd one today informing us (Yippy) that the Theatre will open July 10th for a top-notch Western movie (I'll leave it unnamed). It goes on to say "Reservations Recommended" but nowhere did I see HOW to reserve a seat. Will you be putting that in on another newsletter that we'll be getting soon? Thanks.

The Autry Mission is to tell diverse stories of the American West. However, for seven years Rick West has been complicit in the censorship of The Mark Rothko Southwest History Project. This well documented Rothko revision explains how Rothko's artistic success was a direct result of cultural appropriation. The Autry has known about the project for many years. Two c.1938 Rothkos in the National Gallery of Art that my research explains as Native American subject matter.
