At a time when many people feel disconnected, the Skirball is choosing to build community. In 2025, more than 12,000 people showed up for 33 performances, screenings, and shared experiences. Another 750 chose to dive into Jewish life through classes, book groups, and lifelong learning. Together, we make space for conversations that matter, including through immigration, civil rights, pluralism, and our shared American experience. Because community isn't just about gathering, it's about understanding one another.

What does justice (or in Hebrew, tzedakah) mean to you?

At the Skirball, it means fairness, respect, and caring for one another and the earth. People of all ages can use their strengths, compassion, and everyday actions to build a more just world. Jewish people traditionally use tzedakah boxes to collect loose change on the sabbath and other occasions to donate to people in need. But tzedakah is a much more wide-reaching term, emphasizing the importance of caring for others. In the spirit of tzedakah, you can identify a need in your community and make a plan to effect change.

In a polarized world, kindness can feel profound. But a world worth passing onto our children is built on those small, consistent acts of care. Our oasis, and more specifically our Bloom Garden, makes room for this type of care. You can see it every day in Noah’s Ark, where children offer kindness freely through play, discovery, and shared imagination. That care—for the earth and one another—is at the heart of our Jewish identity. During Jewish American Heritage Month, will you join us and show kindness?

We commit ourselves to seeking learning by remaining open to new ideas, new perspectives, and the conversations that help us better understand one another. During Jewish American Heritage Month, we’re reflecting on the many ways learning takes shape here at the Skirball Cultural Center.

Our rotating exhibitions invite visitors to explore themes of Jewish identity and American ideals through art, history, and dialogue. Pictured in the first image, staff members gather inside The American Library by Yinka Shonibare CBE RA, an installation that examines the layered meanings of citizenship, home, and nationalism.

Learning also happens in our nontraditional classrooms—through Noah’s Ark and our outdoor amphitheater—where students from across Los Angeles engage with empathy, resilience, collaboration, and the work of rebuilding a shared world together.

To seek learning is to stay curious, to welcome complexity, and to allow ourselves to be changed by what we encounter. What lessons have you taken from this brave space?
