Saturday was a volunteer weekend at the museum and we able to get several major projects accomplished. With the assistance of Joe and David, our equipment operators, we were able move a very heavy picnic table built by the Civilian Conservation Corps from the entrance to the museum to its proper place in front of the Civilian Conservation Corps museum. A big thanks to the other volunteers that helped as well.

Attention history buffs. The History Channel will be featuring a documentary about the 761th Tank Destroyer Battalion that trained at Camp Claiborne. It will be on Sunday night, the 20th, at 7:00 pm central time. A portion of the documentary was filmed at the SFHM due to our connection with WWII and our Camp Claiborne Exhibit.

Our volunteers are staying busy even in the current heat wave. A supply building was covered in vegetation and had a dead tree snag by it, but not anymore. What a great job!

News Flash! The Railbus M-4 has had windows installed and now the interior work is underway. This restoration of the M-4 under the leadership of volunteer Glen Armand is progressing smoothly and will return the railbus to its former appearance. As we all know, volunteers are the backbone of any museum and we appreciate all the hard work and dedication of each and everyone.

Unfortunately as the restoration effort is underway the M-4 will not be available until August 8th for regular passenger service. As progress continues we will keep everyone updated. Thanks for your support. Doug Rhodes, Executive Director

Christmas is almost upon us! A friendly reminder that the SFHM closes for the winter. We will be closed to the public from Dec 20, 2020 to Jan 19, 2021. We hope to see you in the New Year!!

Here is a Christmas program for the 168th Infantry regiment of the 34th Infantry Division from Camp Claiborne. The 168th was known for their machine gun and rifle crews. What is interesting to note is that the program is split into secular and religious activities.

Need something do in the new year? SFHM has many volunteer opportunities, like working with Mike and his volunteers on the “Oliver Crawler” Model OC-3. They’re working hard to make it operational here at the museum.

The year 2020 is ending and with it many other things, like the museum’s website. A new website has been created with tons of cool tabs to explore before visiting us in the new year. Some of you may have already ventured upon this website as we switched over back in September but we still encourage you to discover more within it! So if you’re…

…Visiting for a fun time outdoors? Check out the tab “Tours” which highlights our new driving tour of the exhibits and the sawmill. Or even get previews of the 12 exhibits featured here at SFHM. Our newest one, that came out this year, is on Caroline Dormon, who established our very own national forest, the Kisatchie National Forest. And if you find you just love our location and its history, visit our “Weddings” and “Event Rentals” tabs to see how’d you’d like to spend a special day here with friends and family or even co-workers!

…Wondering about why there’s railroad tracks all over Longleaf and Forest Hill? Click on the “Railroading” tab to learn about the history of Red River & Gulf Railroad and the part it played in the lumber business here. And if you visit SFHM in person you can even ride the 1937 “doodlebug” the former Fernwood, Columbia and Gulf M-4!

…Want something to read while at home while sitting on the couch? Pick the “Research” tab to take you to various links of publications by the Southern Research Station or visit our online archives and scroll through documents, photos, and more. All this research has helped SFHM create the exhibits and tour you’ll come to enjoy when you visit.

So click away here at the new website and plan your next adventure: https://www.forestheritagemuseum.org/

See you in the new year!

A Bird's-eye View of the Red River & Gulf Railroad

This past October, the museum was fortunate enough to have the Ben Fournier, the brother of one of our volunteers, Jason Rose, come over and do a drone shoot of the entire RR&G RR and the museum grounds. We hope that you enjoy it, and can get a new perspective of the museum and our mission.

Look forward to seeing you soon.

Red River & Gulf Railroad - Long Leaf, LA

Our total damage in Hurricane Delta was this tree across the loop at the planer mill, which Mike and Gerald cut down already. Just the same we have a work weekend coming up this saturday, and we still have a lot to do cleaning up the railroad from Laura plus plenty of other low impact projects that we need help with, so come out an join us at the Museum at 9 on saturday.

10/11/2020

We are pleased to say that the museum has weathered Hurricane Delta and its 16 inches of rain, with minimal damage and that all of the staff are safe as well. Of course, our power is out, like everyone else. Our sole damage consists of a tree which fell and broke the power and phone lines into the museum office, so we have no phone or internet either. When power is restored to the rest of the museum we will reopen so keep checking here. Until then and until our phone and internet are restored, if you need to contact the museum, please message us here on facebook and we will help you. If your need is more urgent, please call Doug Rhodes, the museum director at 318-769-2447

10/08/2020

The SFHM will be closed for hurricane Delta starting October 9th. We will reopen as soon as possible.

Thanks

Doug Rhodes
Director

I want to thank all the volunteers that came on Saturday and Sunday to help clear hurricane debris from the railroad tracks and others that performed much-needed ground maintenance. I would like to personally invite anyone with an interest in the museum to join us on October 17th for our next workday. No special skills are needed. So come on out and join the fun.

The SFHM in now on Youtube! Everett Lueck and Jason Rose have created a series of episodes that will feature all the wonderful exhibits, equipment, and of course train engines and equipment we have at the SFHM. A special thanks to these volunteers for the work they are doing to promote the museum. So set back and enjoy the first episode by clicking on the link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCoOYKgYgn0&t=349s

The Museum will be without phone service until September 30th. Centurylink is installing new underground wiring to replace the infrastructure destroyed by hurricane Laura. Our internet service is not affected so you can contact the Museum at [email protected].

Thanks,

Doug

09/13/2020

Not sure what happened, but my last post caused some confusion. We are not looking for a new Director, we have one.

09/13/2020

Good morning, I hope everyone has recovered from Hurricane Laura or in the process of doing so. We at the museum also had to clean up and prepare for our reopening. We greatly appreciate everyone that gave of their time and talents to make this possible.
This Wednesday we will reopen with our normal business hours. So please come out and visit the museum and see all the things we have to offer.

If you want a preview, visit our new website at, forestheritagemuseum.org We now have an online store and an online Archive. We will be adding new items to the online store shortly as well as continuously adding information to the online Archives.

So take a break, and have a relaxing visit to the Southern Forest Heritage Museum.

As always, we are looking for volunteers to assist at the museum. We have something for everyone to do, so just give us a call or send an email to; [email protected].

Have a great day,

Doug
