Kim Manfredi: View with a Grain of Sand opens this weekend!

This is an exhibition of paintings that explores perception, landscape and the human desire to impose meaning on the natural world. The works draw from direct observation of elemental phenomena, transforming place into an abstract visual language. Using color layered with drips, bleeds and oversprays, the paintings evoke the vitality and unpredictability of nature. Fragmentation within the compositions reflects humanity’s imprint on the environment while also offering moments of visual play.

The exhibition’s title is drawn from Wisława Szymborska’s poem View with a Grain of Sand, which reflects on human insignificance within a vast, objective universe and seeks to dissolve the illusion of separation between ourselves and the world we inhabit. Like poetry, painting offers an incomplete and metaphorical language, pointing toward subjects that exceed or are even indifferent to description. Through attention to fleeting/ephemeral qualities, new ways of seeing emerge. The works invite viewers to reconsider their relationship to nature and their place within it.

Kim Manfredi: View with a Grain of Sand is organized by Laguna Art Museum as part of the Art + Nature initiative.

Have you seen Radiant Terrains: Elements of Light in Contemporary Art from the Permanent Collection yet?

Drawn entirely from the museum's permanent collection, Radiant Terrains explores how artists working from the 1960s to the present have transformed light into sculpture, painting, photography, installation, and metaphor.

Rather than tracing a single artistic movement, Radiant Terrains unfolds through a series of visual conversations. Light appears throughout the exhibition as atmosphere, physical energy, optical illusion, environmental condition, technological signal and spiritual metaphor. Artists employ industrial plastics, resin, pigment, metallic surfaces, photography, lenticular imagery and transmitted light to explore how light transforms matter and continually reshapes our understanding of space, landscape, memory and the cosmos.

Opening October 3 at Laguna Art Museum! Kim Manfredi: View with a Grain of Sand

Kim Manfredi's paintings translate natural phenomena into abstraction. The works propose a shift in perception-one that fosters a more attentive, reciprocal relationship with the world we inhabit.

Using color layered with drips, bleeds and oversprays, the paintings evoke the vitality and unpredictability of nature.

Expect to come out of this generative workshop with seven pieces of writing, each fully engaging in your sensory, emotional and intellectual interactions with this phenomenal exhibit.

Please, no ink pens, just pencils, paper and/or a computer.

It's your final weekend to see Andy Moses: Into the Light! The exhibition surveys the artist's work of the last two decades, evincing his increasingly expansive commitment to a kind of painting that at once displays and obscures imagery. This work forces you to decide what it is doing to you, what it is showing you, if and how it is tricking your eyes or playing to their strengths. It’s a kind of magic.
