Congratulations to Mark Whalen on his inclusion in π˜‰π˜’π˜¬π˜¦π˜³β€™π˜΄ π˜‹π˜°π˜»π˜¦π˜― at Torrance Art Museum.

The annual survey exhibition brings together thirteen artists whose work made a strong impression on the museum’s curators over the past year, reflecting current directions in Southern California’s contemporary art practices.

We’re delighted to see Mark’s work featured in this year’s exhibition, on view through November 7.

Nobuhito Nishigawara at Homo Faber 2026, Venice ✨

Thrilled to see Nobu’s work included in A Full Moon Rising, an installation conceived by Es Devlin for Homo Faber 2026 - the international celebration of contemporary craftsmanship at Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice.

Set within the former swimming pool, the installation brings together contemporary interpretations of the moon jar, illuminated above the water to create the illusion of a full moon rising from its reflection.

Especially meaningful to see two vessels previously exhibited at GW Contemporary as part of Nobu’s solo exhibition with the gallery last year, now presented within this remarkable setting.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | Melissa Moria

From her studio in Rotterdam, Dutch artist Melissa Moria creates richly layered abstract paintings rooted in material, experimentation and the natural world.

Moria’s process begins long before a brush touches the surface. She prepares and dyes her canvases by hand, creating natural pigments from materials including dried flowers, locally gathered plant matter and cochineal. Allowed to stain, bleed and settle into the fabric, these pigments form the beginnings of a composition, which Moria then responds to intuitively through layers of oil paint and gesture.

Rejecting modern efficiency in favor of a labor-intensive, tactile way of making, Moria embraces the unpredictability of her materials. Nature is not simply a source of inspiration, but becomes part of the physical fabric of each painting.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | Marina Nimmo

From her studio in South West France, British artist Marina Nimmo creates intricately hand-built ceramic sculptures inspired by the natural environment that surrounds her - from shifting seasons to the movement of rivers and tides.

Beginning with spontaneous drawings, Marina translates line and movement into clay, building each sculpture entirely by hand. As the clay reaches its leather-dry stage, she meticulously pares back and refines the surface, gradually transforming substantial forms into delicate, organic structures that appear almost impossibly light.

We are delighted to welcome Marina’s practice to the GW Contemporary program and to present her work in our current exhibition, Where We Meet, on view through November 1.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | Elizabeth Waggett

Manchester-born British artist Elizabeth Waggett, currently based in Texas, creates richly layered works that explore the relationship between light, material, time and labor.

Her ongoing Light Paintings combine precious metals with impressions of antique lace and textiles - connecting the work to Manchester’s rich industrial textile heritage and histories of skilled, often unseen labor. Built through dozens of layers and repeated physical interventions, their surfaces are abraded, oxidized and transformed by hand.

Gold is not simply decorative, but a material that both conceals and reveals. As light moves across each surface, patterns emerge and recede, continually shifting our perception of the work.

Waggett’s work is currently featured in Where We Meet at GW Contemporary.

Every visit offers a different perspective, inviting moments of pause and discovery.

Last week, GW Contemporary had the privilege of celebrating its first anniversary with a ribbon cutting ceremony officiated by the Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce, with representatives from the City of Laguna Beach, the Orange County Board of Supervisors, the California State Assembly and the United States Congress in attendance.

Receiving this recognition was an incredibly meaningful moment - not only as a small business owner, but as a reminder of how fortunate we are to be part of such a supportive community.

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us in celebrating this milestone and to all who have supported GW Contemporary throughout its first year.
