The Alaska State Museum was established on June 6, 1900, when an Act of Congress created the Historical Library and Museum for the District of Alaska. The Alaska State Museums (a state educational agency comprised of the Alaska State Museum and the Sheldon Jackson Museum) identify, collect, preserve and exhibit Alaska's material and natural history and provide public access to services and collections of the Museums. The Alaska State Museums interpret and disseminate knowledge of the history of the state, its people, and its resources, and support others in these efforts. The Museums also assist and advise in the growth, development, and excellence of other museums within Alaska.

Join us at the museum for a book signing with world renowned Haida fashion designer Dorothy Grant. ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฏ ๐˜Œ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ด ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ is the first monograph to celebrate her trailblazing career. It features new photographs of her garments, modeled both in a studio and in natural settings in Vancouver and Haida Gwaii. Early sketches, traditional button robes, and spruce-root weaving are included alongside personal stories shared by Grant. โ€œThe journey to here and now has been a wild and great ride! These photographs have helped me remember all the nuances of pasttimes: the moods, locations, events, and, most importantly, the people.โ€ Essays by Royal BC Museum Curator India Rael Young, curator and artist Kwiaahwah Jones, Executive Director and Curator of the Haida Gwaii Museum, Taa.uu โ€˜Yuuwans Nika Collison, and Haida repatriation specialist and museologist Sdahl Kฬฑ'awaas Lucy Bell, share insight and memories.
