La Plaza

La Plaza visited Gallery 924 on the opening night of 'Feminine Bloodlines, Mexican Womanhood: Erasing Submissiveness' to talk with artist Beatriz Vásquez (Beatrizdesignz) about her work.

The exhibition continues through March 27 and we hope you'll come to see this extraordinary paper cutting art form for yourself.

Gallery 924 is open Monday - Friday, 9 am to 5 pm and by appointment.

924 N. Pennsylvania St., Indianapolis, IN 46204

We had the pleasure supporting artist Beatrizdesignz at her opening reception this weekend "Feminine Bloodlines, Mexican Womanhood: Erasing Submissiveness " at Gallery 924 at the Arts Council.

Her exhibition is open from February 7 - March 27 at
924 N. Pennsylvania St., Indianapolis, IN 46204

Her exhebition “is dedicated to the strong women in my family who have taught me to voice and stand up for what I believe, to create change and empower. This piece is in honor of my great aunt Carlota, she was a Chingona Adelita during the Mexican Revolution of 1917.”

Indianapolis-based Beatriz Vásquez’ Mexican heritage is firmly entrenched in her art practice. Her imagery of flowing colorfully patterned clothing and cultural symbols coupled with her use of the traditional Mexican technique of papel picado (cut paper) reflect the rich history of her family and her childhood growing up in the border town of Brownsville, Texas.

Those memories and narratives converge with the current reality of oppressive traditions that still affect women wherever they live. In this new work, the artist has created larger than life figures to visualize and create space for an empowered and strong female presence in the 21st century.

State of the Art

“She [Beatriz Vásquez] uses layers of paper, but cuts them using only an X-acto knife. She then uses the knife like a pencil, cutting without sketching it out first. The precision and beauty of her paper cut pieces are incredible, and even more mind-blowing knowing she cuts them freehand.”

Aurora PhotoCenter Brings Opportunities for Photography

In a throwback to November 2019, Aurora PhotoCenter revisits 'Is Everyday Extraordinary?' at Gallery 924.

"The third exhibition hosted by APC in 2019 was Is Everyday Extraordinary? A Photography Show. This exhibition was hosted in partnership with Indianapolis art venue, Gallery 924 for the month of November as well. Is Everyday Extraordinary? was billed as an exhibition that celebrates photography’s power to extract the extraordinary from everyday moments. The show featured work by photographers based in central Indiana, and work from about three dozen photographers was shown."

Review: 'Circles: The Renaissance, The Rebirth, The Remix'

"This exhibition of extraordinary art is one more bit of evidence that it’s an extraordinary time for the arts in Indianapolis. It’s an outcome that wouldn’t have happened without the hard work of many artists, art administrators, and volunteers working to make the Circle City more inclusive — and making the city more inclusive by the nature of their work.

"Exhibitions like Circles enrich us all."

Check out this beautiful review of our current exhibition by NUVO's Dan Grossman.

Thank you for joining us last Friday for the opening reception for "Circles: The Renaissance, The Rebirth, The Remix" featuring the works of Mason Archie, Lobyn Hamilton, and Jay Parnell.

Did you know that all three of these artists are Creative Renewal Arts Fellows? They have been meeting informally for years discussing art, politics, identity, life, and culture. From these conversations, a vision for a visual representation of their discussions has emerged, and thus, we are proud to present our October exhibition in Gallery 924.

Circles: The Renaissance, The Rebirth, The Remix

Are you ready to see our October exhibition? Circles: The Renaissance, The Rebirth, The Remix opens TONIGHT at Gallery 924! Come see us from 6 - 9 pm.

The show will touch on many aspects of the black experience, both universally known and deeply personal. Mason Archie shares a few pieces from a current exploration of sites found along the Underground Railroad, Jay Parnell continues to explore his hauntingly beautiful portraits, and Lobyn Hamilton explores found objects in a very powerful and personal journey.

Circles: The Renaissance, The Rebirth, The Remix

“This show is truly a curator’s dream come true. The throughlines that connect the artists and the work are powerful, meaningful, and timely. The three artists represent some of the most well respected, thoughtful, and challenging figurative work by Indianapolis-based artists right now. Our hope is that the show will prove to be an amazing opportunity for collectors to experience the dynamic confluence of these artists coming together and reflecting off of their shared and individual experiences. The opportunity to see these three artists together, each of a different generation and with their own unique style, is incredibly exciting for our community,” said Shannon M Linker, Director of Gallery 924.

TOMORROW is the opening of Circles: the Renaissance, the Rebirth, the Remix featuring the works of Mason Archie, Jay Parnell, and Lobyn Hamilton. Will we see you there?

It also represents when I discovered my new explosion of creativity with it's unusual process. I like to think of it as a gift that my Parkinson's has given me.
