Painting of the Moment

Donna Shortt 9" x 12" oil on board, "Practicing Poetry", signed lower left. Nicely framed and ready to hang. Price: $475.00

Artist Comments:

Practicing Poetry was painted with the purpose of using brushstrokes in a sensitive manner. The cool versus warm elements were very important also. When I encountered this winter scene I knew it was something I wanted to capture in oil paint on linen. I hope that you can feel the poetry of it and the coming winter season.

Artist Comments
These Are the Days is an 11" x 17" woodcut print utilizing 8 carved blocks to arrive at the final image. It's the largest print I've made and it reminds me of the creek where I would play when I was young.

Rick Wilson 12" x 16" oil on board, "Brookville from Overlook Road". Nicely framed and ready to hang. Price: $1,400.00

Artist Comments
I've been going to the IPAPA "Last Brush of Fall" in Brookville for about ten or twelve years. It's always fun to paint in the steps of the Old Masters like TC Steele and William Forsythe. It's also fun to explore the area for new and exciting painting locations. I thought I had seen about all of the most iconic spots -- that is until this year. While driving past the county park to a fork in the road, I took the left fork because it had been a few years since I had taken that road. Just beyond a creek, I saw a road called "Overlook Rd". I had never noticed it before so with a name like "Overlook Rd", it had to be good. It did not disappoint. I got to the top and tucked behind a brick ranch house was the most spectacular view of Brookville I had ever seen.

Summer is winding down and the dark comes quicker now but a walk at night in balmy weather is still enjoyable. I get satisfaction from the recent full moon, porch lights and light from the windows spilling onto the lawns. This 12x9 oil is inspiration from one of those night walks.

Painting of the Moment

Jerry Smith 9" x 12" oil on board, "Fall Frenzy". Housed in a gold reproduction frame. Price: $750.00

Artist's Comments

"Fall Frenzy" represents the exciting burst of warm fall colors as they emerge onto the Indiana rural landscape as summer transitions into the inevitable process of shutting down for winter. In the painting process I used simplified shapes and spots of color to enhance the effect. I feel it's one of those situations where a little less says more.

Gouaches of the Moment

Donna Shortt 5" x 7" gouache on artist's paper, "La Tour-d'Aigues" landscapes. Unframed. Price: $75.00 each! (We can help with inexpensive framing)

Artist's Comments:

Recently traveling to the south of France meant that I could further explore a new medium -- gouache painting became a means to depict the beautiful countryside of Provence. These are examples of newly delivered mini paintings. I also have several others featuring more 'local' subject matter at Gallery Two.

(Editor's note: We have about twenty of Donna's gouaches in the gallery. This group depicts France but most are Indiana landscapes. They're priced from $65-$85, loose.)

Jerry Smith 8" x 10" oil on board, "East Boothbay Shoreline". Nicely framed and presented -- ready to hang. Price: $600.00 (note: we have many other 8x10 frames if this one isn't to your liking)

Artist's Comments:

While on a summer trip to Maine a couple of years ago I attended a paint-out including the Oil Painters of America and a local Maine Coast plein-air painting group. We managed to persevere through three days of intermittent rain, fog and generally inclement weather.

While not always pleasant, the gray skies and atmospheric conditions provided beautiful painting material and an opportunity to meet some East Coast painters. East Boothbay Shoreline is one of the plein air paintings I did while there.

Painting of the Moment

Rick Wilson 24" x 30" oil on canvas, "Cumberland Falls". Nicely framed and presented -- ready to hang. Price: $3,400.00

Artist's Comments:

I recently took a trip down to southern Kentucky to do a plein air painting of Cumberland Falls. I had never been there and really didn't know what to expect but I knew it must be beautiful from all the comments I had heard about it. It did not disappoint. The water was up so a little muddy but the amount of water flowing was amazing. I stood about 50 yards from the base of the seventy foot high falls to paint this piece and I could feel the ground vibrating from the energy. The breeze would occasionally blow my way covering me with a blanket of cool mist from the falls. Perfect on a 90 degree day. I hope to return in the fall for another feast for the eyes and spirit.

Woodblock Print of the Moment

Mark Burkett 7" x 9" woodblock print, "Far Away", ed. 6/25. Nicely framed and presented -- ready to hang. Price: $250.00

Artist's Comments:

"Far Away" depicts a simple summer moonrise reflected in a pond or river. Perhaps "on the banks of the Wabash, far away". It is made from two carved blocks of wood printed in relief with both impressions using blended inking to achieve the color gradients. It started out to be a daytime scene but in the course of color selection it became a night scene. That's one of the options of printmaking!

Painting of the Moment

Ken Scott 11" x 8" Ink, gouache, watercolor and graphite on an antiqued interior book cover, "Rose Breasted Grosbeak". Nicely framed and presented -- ready to hang. Price: $895.00

Artist's Comments:
My first notice of this magnificent bird on a day in mid-spring was its song. Somewhat like the muted voice of an American Robin, but even more beautiful. I scanned the forest’s edge and saw the grosbeak alight along the edge of the glade and begin to forage in fall’s brown leaves. My thoughts harkened back to the 18th century naturalists, who also had observed these birds among the wetlands of colonial America. Calligraphic notations, marginalia and antiquing on the surface medium add a patina that fulfills my desire to create each painting with the appearance of having an historical past.

Mark Burkett 11" x 17" colored woodblock print on paper, "These are the Days". Nicely framed and presented -- ready to hang. Price: $400.00

Artist's Comments:

These are the Days is my most recent woodcut print. It was derived from a painting that I did a couple of years ago near where I live in Mooresville. It reminded me of places of my childhood and the happy days of summer when I played in the creek and woods. Seven blocks of wood were carved to achieve the final image; a separate block for each color in the print. At 11 x 17 inches, it's the largest print that I've done.

Artist's Comments:

This view, near Trafalgar, IN was one that stopped me in my tracks. I actually backed the car up to photograph it. The sun was at the perfect angle and the air was thick creating beautiful layers of atmospheric bliss for an artist. I rushed back to my studio to paint it while still fresh in my memory and with the aid of photographic references. The horse and rider complete the scene through artistic license. Rick Wilson

Painting of the Moment

Jerry Smith 24" x 36" oil on canvas, "Bottom Feeders". Nicely presented and ready to hang. Price: $3,500.00

Artist Comments:

"Bottom Feeders" is a depiction of an old building in Vancouver, B.C. I was intrigued by the patterns formed by the cast shadows under the fire escape. The painting also gave me a chance to use a lot more red paint than I normally get the opportunity to use in my landscape painting. The title alludes to the blackbirds milling around in the shadows on the far right. The painting was included in the Eastern Regional Exhibition of the Oil Painters of America.

Painting of the Moment

Ken Scott 8" x 11" ink, watercolor, gouache and graphite on inside of antiqued book cover, "Great Blue Heron". Nicely presented and ready to hang. Price: $895.00

Artist Comments

When I observe great blue herons, my thoughts harken back to the 18th century naturalists who observed these birds stalking prey along the wetlands in colonial America. One may now and then observe one of these tall, stately looking birds feeding along the bank of a creek or a small pond or lake in Indiana. One may catch a quick glance as it passes over on wing; but to walk up towards one is a fruitless adventure. When startled, they flap their wings as they start to take flight, almost as if they become airborne in slow motion as they ascend over the water.

Calligraphic notations, marginalia and antiquing on the surface medium add a patina that fulfills my desire to create each painting with the appearance of having an historical past.

Alexis Jean Fournier (1865-1948) 24" x 26" oil on masonite, "Late Afternoon (October)" (artist's title), signed lower left. Painting has been cleaned and conserved; no in-painting. Original, leafed frame, unrestored. Auction estimate: $6,000-$12,000

Gallery Comments:

I was really excited about a month ago, to find the top painting, Fournier's Late Afternoon (October), holed up in New Hampshire.

Of all the weird things the second Fournier, In October, found me last week . From the other side of the country -- California.

That they are sized similarly, employ the same palette and were obviously both done in 'October' -- I'm thinking they were painted within a week of each other. I would even say it's the same sheep in each painting ;-). We'll never know but two outstanding examples of Fournier's decade or so of Brown County work.

Both panitings have been fully restored and are respectively housed in their original frames (one being a Newcomb Macklin).

And of course, both will appear in our Third Annual Curated Sale of Historic Indiana Art taking place at the Indianapolis Art Center, April 7, 2019.

Painting of the Moment

Rick Wilson 12" x 16" oil on board, "Canal Reflections", signed lower left. Nicely framed and ready to hang. Price: $1,400.00

Artist Comments:
The canal in Indy is always a favorite subject for artists. I'm no exception. There is always a scene to be painted somewhere along the canal no matter the season.

This scene is in mid-summer with the banks of the canal pulling you in to the arched bridge and the distant trees. The sun is high in the sky casting deep shadows that cascade down the banks to the water. Reflections in the calm water provide a peaceful place for the eye to rest while you imagine yourself in the scene, basking in the summer sun or relaxing in a shady spot sipping a glass of ice tea.

Woodblock Print of the Moment

Mark Burkett 9" x 12" woodcut print on paper, Neighbors, ed. 12/20, signed lower right. Framed; nicely presented and ready to hang. Price: $300.00

Artist Comments:

Neighbors is a color woodcut print derived from six separate blocks of carved plywood (see below). Areas carved out of the smooth surface of the wood will not receive ink when the inked roller goes over them. Every color used in the print has to have an individual block of wood printed in the proper sequence. The individual shapes on the blocks are printed so that an image forms like a jigsaw puzzle. Some shapes overlap so that secondary colors are achieved. After a lot of trial and error and experimenting the final image is achieved and the edition is printed. Each color block goes through press dozens of times depending on the size of the edition to be produced.
