Meet the 65th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army (1899-1956), also known as the Borinqueneers.

A predominantly Puerto Rican unit that served in WWI, WWII, and the Korean War, they are the only segregated Latino unit in US History. The 65th was nicknamed after "Borinquen," the Taíno name for Puerto Rico.

For 25 years, the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum has preserved and shared the extraordinary contributions of African Americans in military history.

Founded through the vision and dedication of Captain Paul J. Matthews, the Museum continues to build on that legacy under the leadership of its new CEO, Desmond Bertrand-Pitts, as it prepares for its next chapter.

Happy Birthday to the US Navy! 🇺🇸🎉

Today we recognize the legacy of Michelle Janine Howard, retired Admiral of the United States Navy.

During her tenure in the Navy, Howard would acquire many firsts in her service (1982-2017).

First African American woman to command a ship in the US Navy.
First African American woman to lead a US Navy battle group.
First African American woman to earn two and three star ranks.
First woman promoted to four star ranked Admiral.
First woman to be appointed Vice-Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO).

Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and we honor the Alaska Territorial Guard (ATG), Native Americans who came together to protect Alaska during World War II.

This volunteer defense force was established after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the partial occupation of the Aleutian Islands (most southwestern lands of Alaska). The ATG worked as an intelligence network, supply and equipment transporters, coastal and inland scouts, and fighters when engaged with enemy combatants.

Although active from June 1942 to March 1947, members of the ATG weren’t given full military benefits until Alaskan US Senator Ted Stevens sponsored a bill that would issue honorable discharges (veteran status) to all those who served. That bill was passed in 2000.

Meet Lydia Esther Thornton Moore (1922–2011), a proud Afro-Latina and a hero of WWII. 🇺🇸✨

Born in Nogales, Arizona, Lydia enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 after her brother was wounded in battle. Fluent in Spanish and English, she chose to serve in the legendary 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—the only all-Black, all-female military unit deployed overseas during World War II. As part of the "Six Triple Eight," Lydia worked in freezing, damp warehouses across Europe, clearing millions of pieces of backlogged mail to restore the vital connection between frontline troops and their families. Their motto? "No Mail, Low Morale."

After the war, she continued serving her community in Los Angeles for decades as a dedicated school teacher and social worker. Thank you for your service, Lydia. Your legacy lives on! 🎖️🖤

Meet Dioris Valladares (1916-2001), Dominican Veteran of World War II.

Better known for his contributions to music, he immigrated to the United States (New York) from Santo Domingo at 20 years old. He enlisted in the Army, serving from 1942 to 1945.
