At HMAAC, our exhibitions aren’t meant to simply be seen. Step into Lorenzo Pace: Never Forget, Life and Art is to Play and encounter a body of work that moves through memory, history, identity, and the possibilities of play.Then, enter Allie Martin’s Jasper, 1940: A Sound Installation, curated by Maleke Glee, where sound becomes an archive—inviting us to sit with place, history, and what continues to reverberate across generations.

What does it mean to truly listen?

During the artist talk for Jasper, 1940: A Sound Installation, artist Allie Martin and curator Maleke Glee invited us deeper into a conversation about sound, memory, archives, and the stories we inherit.

Through a motion-activated soundscape rooted in archival recordings from Jasper, Texas, Jasper, 1940 asks us to do more than hear. It asks us to slow down, pay attention, and consider what becomes possible when we listen intentionally.

BAYOU CITY STEWARDS NAMED #1 IN TEXAS

Glasstire counts down the Top Five art events in Texas, and Bayou City Stewards: America From Our Perspective has been named the #1 exhibition on its August 13 list.

Presented by the Houston Museum of African American Culture, Bayou City Stewards brings together visual art, objects, archives, and storytelling from Houston-based artists, collectors, and cultural stewards to examine and reframe narratives of American life through Black perspectives.

The exhibition continues to invite reflection, dialogue, and response from those who experience it.
