I hate having a reason to share this photograph by Henry Horenstein ahead of our show that opens next month. Dolly was the best of us.

Artists Keith Carter and Cathy Spence were in the gallery today to see our current exhibition, and it was fascinating to listen to Cathy point out how she thinks Keith would have printed this image by Henri Cartier Bresson. They both agreed it’s a fantastic print as is.

The print just to the right of Keith is the contact sheet of his seminal image, Fireflies. Always a great day when these two make the drive up from Beaumont!

Happy birthday to gallery artist and all around good time, Cara Barer! We’re celebrating by selling Whale and Bone to a favorite collector. It’s off to Santa Fe tomorrow!

One of these is the iconic America Gothic by Grant Wood, and one is a friend and me at the AG house in Eldon, Iowa. Good luck figuring out which is which!

I picked the wrong sized pitchfork, and I’ll never forgive myself. Thanks, Iowa, for a great trip!

The opening of Thirty Years: The Legacy of John Cleary Gallery was phenomenal. So many of the gallery’s best friends showed up, including Barre, shown in picture 1, who originally hired me, 27 1/2 years ago! Also pictured is Burt, who was at the grand opening, bought a photograph that night, and has been through thick and thin with both John and me.

2: People loved our themed cocktail!
3: A tough angle to capture, courtesy of Zan Zeller!
4: Checking out the show.
5: Comparing our two Kertesz Melancholic Tulips, no doubt!
6: I had to get mini beers because John Cleary always bought them!
7: When your daughter and a collector match.
8: Even my godmother came!
9: More matching styles.
10: Burt, Leslie, and Morris. The photography world in Houston wouldn’t be the same without them!
11: The ad John ran in Photography in New York when he first opened. We advertised in that publication for years!
12: Cheers to 30 Years!

Just had a very exciting meeting with a collector who wants to consign/trade some pieces. Each name is bigger than the next, each image is a knockout, and the condition is fantastic on every single piece. Her father started the collection, and while I didn’t know him, I wish I had! Case in point: he wanted to buy some Bravos so put his then 8 year old daughter in the car and drove to Mexico City to buy them from the man himself. My kinda guy!

Be on the lookout for new works by Kertesz, Mapplethrope, William Klein, W Eugene Smith, Larry Clark, and many more. Today was about as fun as is gets in the gallery biz!

Join us tomorrow, Saturday, June 27 from 5:00-7:00 pm to raise a glass (it’s actually going to be a pouch, but more on that tomorrow) to the opening of Thirty Years: The Legacy of John Cleary Gallery. The show features some of John’s favorites mid century French photographs, including the very first print he ever bought and a few images from the first show 30 years ago. It’s a beautiful show to recognize John’s entrepreneurial spirit and love of photography, without which my gallery wouldn’t be here today. See you Saturday!
