In Camera Work, Cara Barer starts with the same book sculptures she’s been creating for years, but instead of scanning the top or bottom, she’s now using her camera to capture more angles and shapes than ever before. We have a few of the sculptures in the gallery to highlight the process (plus they’re really beautiful on their own). Cara Barer: Camera Work is on view now through November 28!

Thank you so much Glasstire for including our Cara Barer show in the Top Five Art Events in Texas! Being on a list with the likes of The Menil Collection and Chinati Foundation, Marfa, TX is a a huge honor.

Here’s Robert Doisneau’s Les Glaneurs de Charbon from 1945. The first is the well known image held by the likes of the Centre Pompidou. The second is a variant I’ve only seen once, although I’ve owned it twice. I sold the pair to a collector years ago, and she recently sold the pair back to me. The variant was printed in July 1980 (I love it when Doisneau’s printing dates are on the back of the print), and there can’t be many (if any) others. They’re available individually or as a set!

Also, any good art history student knows the word Glaneurs from the famous Millet in the Musee d’Orsay, but for those who are new to the word, a gleaner is a person who goes to a field after the harvest to pick up the scraps left behind. These kids probably followed behind a coal delivery truck and picked up whatever bounced out. You can see the chunks of ice floating in the canal; a rough time to be in need of heat.

What a great way to spend a morning off! Glasstire is doing a photo series to celebrate their 25th anniversary, and I was so honored to be asked to take part in one highlighting galleries who have “shaped the city’s art scene since 2000.” Can’t wait to see what the talented (and endlessly adorable) Emily Peacock captured!

There are so many brilliant and fun people in the Houston gallery world. Get out there and meet them all!
