On View in Our Sitting Room: Stephen Dean, Richard Hunt, Louise Nevelson, and Donald Sultan

Beyond our main exhibitions, the works installed throughout the gallery change every few months. This autumn, we’re pleased to present works by artists in our gallery program alongside a selection of blue-chip works available at the gallery.

The room is anchored by a 1976-1978 Nevelson wall assemblage. Recognized as one of America’s most innovative sculptors, Nevelson is best known for her monochromatic constructions of found wooden objects. Beside it, Richard Hunt’s “Jacob’s Ladder (maquette),” made from welded steel and industrial scrap, echoes Nevelson’s approach to bringing three-dimensional abstraction to life from found materials.

Stephen Dean’s “Black Ladder” explores the interplay of saturated color, transparency, and light through layered dichroic glass panels. Donald Sultan, long drawn to contrasts between beauty and roughness, and between realism and abstraction, is represented by “Black Poppies 2017” and “Pink and Copper Mimosa Nov 28 2025.” In both works, industrial materials, from aluminum to enamel and Masonite, are transformed into cleanly constructed, lush botanical forms, balancing the natural and the artificial.

In “Astonishment Fills As Bolts Of Cosmic Energy Beam Through Land And Sky,” a new polyptych by Terran Last Gun, halved circles are found peeking over the bottom edge of the page.

Through the piece’s nine panels, the artist summons the feeling of a rising sun with a black to white gradient, contrasted by bright blue and red beams of color that fall from the top of the page in the shape of a chevron.

On View | Bo Joseph: Daedalus Ciphers

Joseph’s paintings entice and lure the viewer into cryptic passages with a deliberately rollicking palette. The artist layers radiating, concentric oil-stick lines on top of a washed tempera ground, lending a pastel tone to the background. The labyrinth is novel in concept but also in its medium. Joseph renders it by applying acrylic in wet layers, thick brushstrokes, and marbled drips of paint.

The interplay between media is clearest in “Daedalus Cipher No. 3,” where remnants of a yellow-hued structure peek out from behind a marigold-colored maze. That charged undercurrent interacts with the figures and forms in the foreground, leading viewers to lose touch with depth and distance as the garden grows rhythmically.

“The two registers function as a counterpoint to each other,” the artist notes, a combination he describes as “a dark premise carried by a carnivalesque tease, drawing the viewer into the encoded space.”

“Bo Joseph: Daedalus Ciphers” remains on view through October 24.

In The Booth: Donald Baechler

Donald Baechler’s work is known for its collaged backgrounds and thickly outlined foreground images. Emerging in the 1980s as part of New York City’s East Village art scene alongside such luminaries as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Kenny Scharf, Baechler drew upon images culled from scattered ephemera, often evoking a child-like wonder in his finished surface.

In The Booth: Aaron Parazette

Parazette, a fixture of the Houston art community for decades, is known for his distinctive approach to abstraction and his longstanding interest in form and color.

His newer “Endless Line” paintings continue this exploration with a new emphasis on line and intuition. Compositions are built from a single continuous line that loops, overlaps, and crisscrosses across the surface, often developed intuitively using pin-stripe tape directly on the painting support. The resulting all over compositions nod to the gestural legacy of Abstract Expressionism.
