Wistariahurst Museum Wistariahurst is an educational and cultural center owned and operated by the City of Holyoke and supported by The Wistariahurst Foundation.

Wistariahurst Museum is dedicated to preserving Holyoke’s history and inspiring an appreciation of history and culture through educational programs, guided tours, exhibits and special events. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Wistariahurst is the former home of William Skinner, a prominent silk manufacturer and was built in 1874. Today, Wistariahurst offers a wide variety of public programs and events including: workshops, concerts, lectures and demonstrations and serves the community through educational programs, community partnerships, history projects, and outreach activities. Wistariahurst Museum is preparing for another amazing Dia de Los Mu***os celebration with Attack Bear Press with a special calaveras painting activity during the museum’s Sensory Friendly Trick or Treat event. Guests are welcome to relax and paint outside or inside Wistariahurst’s Carriage House (weather dependent) on October 25th, 1:00pm-3:00pm.

Singer-songwriter Jess Martin and poet and environmental educator Kim Hoff bring their collaborative project Echoes of Nature to Wistariahurst for a special performance during Doors Open Holyoke this Saturday, October 17th at 1:00pm.

Blending original songs, poetry, storytelling, and place-based creative work, Martin and Hoff explore our relationships with nature, memory, grief, and the places that shape us. For Wistariahurst, the artists in addition to presenting nature-based works, they are also creating new work in conversation with the museum’s Memento Mori exhibition and its exploration of death, mourning, and remembrance.

Wistariahurst Museum will be open on Saturday, October 17th for Doors Open Holyoke from 10:00am-3:00pm.

During this time, the musical storytelling performance "Echoes of Nature" will be happening in the Music Room from 1:00-2:30pm!

"Victorian Sentiments," a presentation on Victorian mourning jewelry and gravestone symbolism with Joanne and Dennis Picard, comes to Wistariahurst's Music Room Tuesday, October 27th at 5:30pm.

Jewelry and gravestones may seem to be an unlikely combination, but both reflect society’s beliefs about death and mourning in similar ways. Though we may identify mourning jewelry and sentimental gravestone symbolism with the Victorian period, their roots and usage go back to antiquity: looking back just a few hundred years reveals dramatic changes in how people thought about death.

Joanne and Dennis Picard will share images and stories about the changes in our area with the coming of garden cemeteries and the formal ritualization of mourning. This presentation will be held in Wistariahurst Museum's Music room on Tuesday, October 27th at 5:30pm. Admission is donation based, with a sliding scale of $1 - $10.

Wistariahurst Museum is thrilled to announce that the installation of Tracey-Mae Chambers’ artwork “Hope and Healing” has been installed!
