Each day we’re closed for a private event means many more we can be open to the public.

When we’re closed for private events, that includes the mansion, carriage house, water garden, chapel, and grounds. Shore Acres Park to the west of the estate (beyond the ridge) remains open.

The Felt Estate is a fabulous background for photos! 😍 Engagement, senior/grad, or quinceañera, our outdoor spaces are open to the public Monday through Wednesday. Please avoid Thursday through Sunday to respect the weddings we host this time of year. However, Saugatuck Dunes State Park and Shore Acres Township Park have some great wooded and beach locations to check out on the weekends! 🏖️

How do you plan an outdoor wedding in Michigan?

The most important thing you can do is plan like the weather won’t cooperate, because sometimes it won’t, and that’s okay. At The Felt Estate, our water garden ceremony space is genuinely stunning when the sun is out, but we’ve built real contingency into the experience so you’re never scrambling. Our historic ballroom is always ready as an indoor option, and we keep clear umbrellas on hand so your photos stay beautiful even if the skies don’t.

When guests move to cocktail hour they are typically enjoying drinks on the park view terrace, wandering the grounds, and exploring the mansion, but if rain makes an appearance - there’s plenty of room for everyone to explore the mansion.

When it come time to enter the reception, our wedding reception tent sits on a permanent patio, which means no soft ground, no sinking heels, no muddy chaos, just a covered, solid space that works in any weather.

As a Saugatuck wedding venue just minutes from Lake Michigan, we know what summers here actually look like, and we’ve planned for all of it.

Before the first couple walks the aisle, there’s a whole lot of work that happens behind the scenes. A day in the life at The Felt Estate, a historic Michigan wedding venue set inside a century-old estate on the shore of Lake Michigan.

Every newly engaged couple who books The Felt Estate as their wedding venue has a team behind them from the very first conversation through the wedding day. Rental managers, event supervisors, and event assistants, all working toward creating an experience and wedding day where all feel welcome and genuinely cared for - each couple and everyone who shows up to celebrate with them.

Behind the scenes, a setup and cleaning crew ensures the estate is ready before the first guest arrives and cared for after the last one leaves, an essential part of the experience that most guests never see.

While these teams focus on couples and their wedding guests, the rest of our organization is dedicated to the nonprofit mission at the heart of everything we do here. Our Executive Director, Operations Manager, Facilities Manager, board of directors, and volunteers lead the programming, restoration, and ongoing preservation of the beautiful 1928 Michigan Historic Site. Weddings are a meaningful part of how that work gets supported.
