MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY FOR KEEWATIN.

50 years ago today Keewatin was retired. In this photo Keewatin is length wise in the Port McNicoll slip making the turn toward the flour shed dock on what may have well been her last approach in revenue service to the Port dock. SCOTT GARRETT got this photo about twenty years ago from the widow of a deceased CPR agent that had been posted in Port McNicoll.

The Royal Yacht BRITANNIA

Built on the River Clyde, just as KEEWATIN, the BRITANNIA is now also a museum. Having enjoyed walking her decks, in 2012, she is a highly recommended destination for anyone interested in experiencing the romance of a truly beautiful vessel.

We were lucky enough to get hold of this wonderful Pathe footage of her launch back on 16 April 1953, and are delighted to be able to share this with you...

As our dear Keewatin has now left the country, and returned to her former home in Canada, one would suppose the title of this page requires changing. Please post your thoughts, on this matter, so that we might take the next step in our support of this grand "Lady of The Lakes".

DOUGLAS, Mich. (WZZM) - Dozens of visitors lined the harbor bright and early Wednesday morning to give an emotional goodbye to the S.S. Keewatin. Some of them waited all day long, before giving up and finally heading home.

UPDATE 5:15 p.m. DOUGLAS, Mich. (WZZM) - Stuck! That's what best described the S.S. Keewatin as crews attempted to move it from its dock in Douglas Wednesday. Everything seemed to be in place to get the historic vessel on her way back to Ontario, Canada. Tug boats were in place; the channel was dr...

The rumors are true, and the Keewatin shall be returning to her former home, in Canada. Though she has been lovingly cared for, by her owners in the United States, they only desire what is best.

So, when arrangements have been made, and preparations in place, the last steam-powered passenger-vessel of the Great Lakes, and of the era, shall make another journey into history.

May God bless her, and all who sail on her.

09/08/2010

As when she was underway, the Keewatin shall be continuing to operate through the month of September, for the first time in decades. Please come and join us for a little excursion.

Only days away from beginning our traditional "Tea Service". Thursday, at 3:00pm...get your reservations in early. :)

Once again, Keewatin has made another contribution to her maritime heritage. Today she was visited by a French film crew, gathering information, and archival footage, to be used in two documentary-styled television shows. One will be on the "Eastland Disaster", while the second is about the "Empress of Ireland".

Getting ready for a film crew to arrive, on Thursday. They will be making a documentary on the "Eastland Disaster", using Keewatin as a backdrop.

Walking the decks, once again, a former crew member visited today. A tour guide, from 1968 to 1970, memories were shared of a fondness which never seems to dim, even given the passage of time.

07/07/2010

It was 103 years ago today that the Keewatin's hull first entered the water. Though a lady seldom reveals her age, when she still looks this good, after all this time...why not?

We would have celebrated this birthday, with a cake, but even Grande Dames have to watch their figures.
