Ceramic Sculptures by Travis Winters
Public Lecture and Reception will be held on Feb. 11

Ceramic Sculptures by Travis Winters will be on display in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, from January 20 – February 13. A public lecture will be held on Feb. 11 at 12 p.m. in Whitaker 214 followed by a reception at the gallery.
Travis Winters constructs characters, often humorous, each focused on its own individual narrative. These stories are based on mundane day-to-day life, past struggles, and real people. Throughout our lives we encounter many “characters” and create our own stories. Some of these people and stories become part of our personal identity as we pass them on to those around us. Travis narrates these stories derived from human nature, universal experiences, and his own personal understanding of the world around him. Drawing from these observations, he is able to manifest prevalent themes about life within our contemporary society. By creating comical figures, he initiates a non-threatening conversation about a variety of topics prevalent within our culture. Captivating the imagination of the viewer through open-ended stories, he invites the fabrication of personal narratives and encourages an intimate connection with the characters. This dialogue between viewer and figure encourages various interpretations, all while relating the narrative back to themes of everyday existence and experiences. With his work, he is modeling his figures with exaggerated folds and wrinkles in order to create a visceral encounter with each narrative. Through sculpting in this stylized yet realistic way, the viewer gets hooked in as their curiosity leads them to closely examine each character.
Travis Winters is a ceramic artist and Programs Director at Touchstone Center for Crafts in southwestern Pennsylvania. Originally from Corning, NY, he found his fascination for working in clay at community college and later went on to receive a BA from Buffalo State College and an MFA from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Winters exhibits work nationally and has shown at the Baltimore Clayworks in Baltimore, MD, the Clay Studio in Philadelphia, PA, the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA, the Baton Rouge Gallery in Baton Rouge, LA, and the AMOCA Museum in Pomona, CA. Travis was the Lormina Salter Fellowship Artist at the Baltimore Clayworks, a long term Resident at Odyssey Clayworks in Asheville, NC, a Kiln God Summer Resident at the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in New Castle ME and a Short-Term Resident Artist at the Red Lodge Clay Center in Red Lodge, MT.

Please join us tomorrow night for Lillian Bayley Hoover's lecture and reception!!

Paintings by Lillian Bayley Hoover will be on display in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, from Sept. 2 – Sept. 26. A lecture will be held on Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. in Whitaker 214 followed by a reception at the gallery.
Hoover’s recent paintings begin as encounters in landscapes, particularly those marked by geological “deep time.” They bear witness to human interventions in the landscape, and to our interactions with the non-human world. Such interventions reify systems of control and speak to notions of access — specifically, who have access to nature. Portions of the picture plane seem to be torn away or excised, revealing flat passages of chromatic grays, blacks, and browns. These interruptions and barriers prevent the viewer from fully entering or navigating the space. Competing visual languages and surfaces reflect our experience of the land we inhabit, our interactions with what is considered "wild," and the varying degrees to which our encounters with nature are mediated. Given the rift between human and non-human worlds, how should we proceed? How might we live well within these disrupted spaces? Part meditation, part metaphor, part elegy, these landscapes explore the anxiety, despair, terror, and joy which characterize our shared precarity.
Lillian Bayley Hoover's work appears in public collections including the Baltimore Museum of Art, Weatherspoon Art Museum (Greensboro, NC), and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. She is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Grant, the Bethesda Urban Partnership's Trawick Award, multiple grants from the Maryland State Arts Council, a travel grant from Philadelphia’s Center for Emerging Visual Artists, and fellowships to attend residencies at Vermont Studio Center, Monson Arts Center, and Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Her work has been featured on the cover of New American Paintings. She has had solo exhibitions at MoCA Arlington (Arlington, VA), Goya Contemporary (Baltimore, MD), BlackRock Center for the Arts (Germantown, MD), and VisArts (Rockville, MD), among other venues. Hoover holds an MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art and a BFA from University of North Carolina Asheville. She teaches at Towson University.

“Morsels” by John Cline will be on display in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, from February 24 – March 21. A public lecture will be held on March 20 at 6 p.m. in Whitaker 214 followed by a reception at the gallery.
John Cline earned a BFA from Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Maryland. In 2005, he earned an MFA from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City. His first faculty appointment was at Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington, Wyoming, where he oversaw the visual arts degree program from 2010 to 2021. In the Fall of 2021, he left the college to teach at the local high school, a position he held for two years. In 2023 John was hired by HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College to teach drawing and painting as a full-time faculty member.
In graduate school, John was trained in the traditional representational techniques of the European oil painters. He appreciates the knowledge these techniques imparted to him, but having finally succeeded in achieving his childhood dream of crafting paintings rich with photographic illusion, he was startled to realize that his form was no longer capable transmitting his message. The work on display in Morsels represents his first serious attempt to break out of old, self-imposed limitations to communicate visually in new ways.
John lives in Harrisburg with his wife, Nancy. He has three daughters.
The Rose Lehrman Art Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Friday, Tuesday and Thursday 5 p.m.-7 p.m., or by appointment.
