Back in the early 1980s, I felt artsy after a two-year stint at HACC (Harrisburg Area Community College) and paid the hefty subscription to Artforum magazine. My first issue in 1982 displayed a collage of Polaroid photos by David Hockney. I then had a flashback to his pool paintings from the late 1970s. For a young artist, it made me realize that an artist was not confined to a single medium. His confidence in his art and what he produced also confirmed for me that art was personal without waiver. Hockney died yesterday. His prominent works were birthed in the afterlife of post-war contemporary artists and provided the meld for many renowned and common artists like me in the 1980s and the galaxy reach into the future. Thanks David.

Many thanks to Bob MacGinnes for his generous coverage of Gallery at Second in his latest blog in TheBurg. He chronicles the footsteps from The State Museum of Pennsylvania (Art of the State exhibition) to the culinary excellence of Mangia Qui to the steps of Gallery at Second— all as a preview for this Friday’s 3rd in the Burg. These tasty locations are just a segment of the venues which showcase Harrisburg’s culture. Erin Dunn and Ben Walke are opening a new art gallery this December. Gallery 2424 is located in the Starland District of Savannah, Georgia. Opening a physical art gallery is a daunting venture, so join me in wishing them well with the gallery’s launch. Their Instagram account is and their Facebook link is below. I’m sure that they’d appreciate the following.
