Jonathan Hager House Museum

Jonathan Hager House Museum Few cities which predate the nation itself can boast the home of their founding father, preserved, restored, and furnished to its 18th century glory.
(1)

Raised over a never failing spring, this 18th Century fortress of a home celebrates the 275th year anniversary of city founder, Jonathan Hager's, first land buy at this site in 1739. Archaeological evidence supports that this site was occupied and inhabited by native Americans long before any European settlers ever set foot on American soil. Visit the Jonathan Hager House Museum and step into the

past, for a unique experience unlike any other place in the world. Located in America's most beautiful Hagerstown City Park.

The City of Hagerstown is proud to announce the completion of Phase I of the Renovation of the new Jonathan Hager House Museum Visitor Center! This phase of the project was funded in part by the Appalachian Regional Commission and managed by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.

Special thanks to Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory (MAC Lab) for their assistance with the removal and storage of the museum’s many artifacts. Final exhibit designs have been completed with Iondesign and are ready for fabrication! The interior gallery space has been updated and modernized by Garrett Construction featuring a new faux Dutch door and fireplace!

This project has been a major undertaking, updating nearly 60-year-old exhibits, completed when the museum first opened for the bicentennial. This has been an ongoing project for Hagerstown Parks & Recreation since 2019 with the assistance of the Department of Engineering and Public Works.

Staff will be moving operations to the lower level over the next couple weeks and museum operations will resume normally by July 2026! We invite the public to see the newly renovated space when the site is open for tours: Fridays & Saturdays 10am-4pm and Sundays 12pm-4pm. Follow us on Facebook to stay up to date on our events, programs and for updates on our progress with Phase II!

The Hager House is officially closed for the 2025 season. Thank you to all who attended our events this year including Ghost Tours, Hager Week, and German Christmas. We can't wait to celebrate with everyone next year!

Also, a quick update on our Visitor Center Renovation Project! Demolition has officially begun! We hope to reopen the main visitor space for the 2026 season to show off all our hard work with a preview of the new exhibits to come.
