Roots & Branches: Researching Your Ancestors with Mike Swanson

The October 2026 Miller Program at Fulton’s Windmill Area will take place on Monday, October 19 at 6:00 PM. The Volunteer Millers are sponsoring an evening of learning about genealogy from archivist Michael Swanson. The event will be held at the Windmill Cultural Center at 111 – 10th Avenue in downtown Fulton, Illinois.

Michael worked as an archivist in the Elwyn B. Robinson Department of Special Collections at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. He earned a Master of Science in Information degree from the University of Michigan. Michael was a regular presenter at the annual Moorhead Family History Workshop in Moorhead, Minnesota, from 2010 to 2023, and he has been a staff member since 2012 for the annual Swedish American Genealogist Workshop in Salt Lake City, Utah. He currently resides in Moline, Illinois, and he assists with various projects for the Swenson Swedish American Research Center at Augustana College in Rock Island.

Researching one’s family history is an enjoyable and fulfilling activity. Interesting discoveries about ancestors can provide insight into our own lives or the lives of other contemporary family members. With the advent of digitized records and searchable indexes, it has become more convenient to find details about our ancestors. This presentation will address important concepts of genealogical research and highlight various records that can be accessed. The use of DNA testing in conjunction with research will also be discussed.

The monthly Miller Programs are free and open to the public. The Windmill Cultural Center is handicap accessible. Refreshments are served following the program. For more information or updates, call 563-249-6115.

The Iowa Investigator: Social Media Influencer, & Local Historian JT Vonderhaar

The next Miller Program will be held on Monday, September 14 at 6:00 at Fulton’s Windmill Cultural Center. The facility is located at 111 – 10th Avenue in downtown Fulton, Illinois, across the street from De Immigrant Windmill. The event is free and open to the public.

JT The Iowa Investigator is a social media creator from Bettendorf, Iowa, known as The Iowa Investigator. He started making videos on social media in 2022 and pivoted his focus to the State of Iowa in 2023. His videos focus primarily on Iowa history, but they sometimes also touch on topics like sports, human interest, food, politics, or anything he finds interesting in his home state.

Over the last several years he has amassed more than 100,000 followers across different platforms, and JT enjoys traveling the state to learn new things. Although he is not a “private investigator” nor a trained historian, he believes there are many interesting stories about the State of Iowa that are often overlooked. His work attempts to buck the notion that Iowa and the greater Midwest are boring places that are not worth learning about.

The Volunteer Millers invite the public to attend this program to learn more about how to increase your social media presence as well as how to look at local history with a new eye. The program will be followed by light refreshments. These free monthly programs are made possible through a grant from FACE, Fulton’s community foundation.

LAST BREADMAKING CLASS OF THE SEASON
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5

The Volunteer Educators at De Immigrant Windmill in Fulton, Illinois, will be offering a BREADMAKING event at the Windmill Cultural Center, on Saturday, September 5. This is a multi-generational activity enjoyed by all ages and a great outing for friends wanting to share some time together.

Sign up for slots at 10:15, 10:45, 11:15, 11:45, 12:15 or 12:45. Walk-ins are welcome as well but people with reservations are prioritized. All guests will be able to use our stone-ground flour, mix it up, and knead it into dough. Approximately 20 minutes later, you have a fresh baked loaf of rye or wheat bread to take home and enjoy.

While you are waiting for your bread to bake we have a scavenger hunt available for you at De Immigrant across the street if you so desire or a tour of our collection of windmills, drainage mills, and sawmills at the Cultural Center. The cost is $5.00 per loaf. Call Pam 563-340-0809 or email [email protected] to reserve your spot.

What's wrong with doing a good thing twice? Nothing! Our next cottage baker is our first cottage baker - Dough Re Mi. They will be selling their baked goods outside of the Windmill Cultural Center on Saturday, August 1, from 9:00 to noon (or until sold out). Come for the breadmaking and stay for the sourdough!
