🚫 Fort Lauderdale spring break was not invented by a movie. It was invented by a municipal swimming pool, and the city dedicated it on January 29, 1928. 🏊‍♂️
Long before Hollywood arrived, the Las Olas Casino Pool sparked a cultural phenomenon. Designed by architect Francis Abreu, it was the first Olympic-sized swimming pool in Florida, holding 420,000 gallons of filtered salt water. A massive crowd of 35,000 people turned out for its opening day!
Here is how a pool transformed our beaches:
• The Real Origin (1935): The Collegiate Aquatic Forum brought college swim teams south for winter training. Between intense sessions in the brand-new pool, swimmers headed to the sand—marking the true birth of modern spring break.
• The Slow Burn: Through the 1950s, "spring vacation" remained a relatively quiet tradition, drawing about 20,000 students a year.
• The Hollywood Boom (1960): Author Glendon Swarthout brought his Michigan State students here for "research," leading to the famous novel and film Where the Boys Are. National media finally took notice, crowds instantly surged past 50,000, and by the mid-1980s, the migration peaked at a massive 250,000 students annually.
From elite athletic training ground to global party destination, it all started with a single historic pool right here on the Fort Lauderdale grid. 🌴
