Falmouth Museums on the Green Falmouth Historical Society & Museum on a beautiful 2 acre campus featuring two 18th-century houses, a 19th century barn, and Cultural Center.

d on a two-acre complex in the heart of historic Falmouth Village. Two 18th century houses showcase period furnishings, fine arts, handmade quilts and samplers. Special exhibits depict Falmouth's 19th century maritime industries, the practice of pre-Civil War medicine, and the life of Katharine Lee Bates, Falmouth-born author of "America the Beautiful."

Notice the spelling of "Wawquatt Bay" in this 1831 map. Some think that the place name “Waquoit” was derived from the Algonquian "ukquae" + "at," meaning “at the head of the bay.”

At our Finding Vinland exhibition, which is opening to the public on September 4th, we examine theories that Natives and Vikings had contact at Waquoit Bay in the year 1000.

⛵ Make Waves for History

Here's a fascinating mystery: historians believe Dr. Francis Wicks may have served as a physician aboard a privateer during the American Revolution. He returned with enough silver to purchase the land where he built the iconic Wicks House in 1790—a reminder that Falmouth's history has always been tied to the sea.
