“Illuminated Histories and Speculative Futures” is an installation that highlights local businesses based on local research and curated creation of historical neon signs of businesses in Elmira and the surrounding areas. Artist James Ronner proposes that “the socioeconomic histories embedded in signage offers us an invaluable insight into our community's past and perhaps a vision of our future.”
We extend special gratitude to the Chemung County Historical Society as a research resource.
This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes.

Following Free Arts Class sessions, children, youth, teens and their families enjoy engaging with a vintage vending machine transformed by the power of creativity, community and connection into a generous point of wonder, curiosity, education and imagination!
Students make their free art selections through mechanical operations based on letters, numbers and aspects of engineering . . . the "The Giving Robot" then gifts them free inspirational surprises of art joy wrapped in upcycled magazine pages . . . from wiggle eyes students can work into their own art, to sensational stickers of encouragement, to buttons of friendly bunny faces, to colorful keychains hand-painted by a local artist . . . those are just a few samples of artful presents in the early chapters of the wondrous, innovative, artrepreneurial journey of "The Giving Robot" since the art vending machine arrived in 2023 . . . more students, more families, and more artists will continue to grow, learn, teach, make and create together in this story, so please stay tuned for more adventures of "The Giving Robot" Project with Originator, Host, Artist & Teaching Artist Filomena Jack of Filomena Jack Studio, at Community Arts of Elmira!
