The Arnot Art Museum is a landmark jewel of the art world in downtown Elmira, New York. Housed in the 1833 neo-classical Arnot family mansion, it is one of the last remaining private art collections formed in the 19th century still exhibited in its original showcase. Arnot added a picture gallery in the 1890’s and bequeathed his home and collection in 1910 to become the Arnot Art Museum, which ope

ned to the public three years later. A 1985 addition by Graham Gund Associates provides additional exhibition galleries. The Museum displays a Permanent Collection of 17th - to 19th –century European paintings, 19th- through 21st- century American art and collections of Asian and Egyptian artifacts. Temporary exhibitions highlight various aspects of the collections and include works from museums around the world.

While the family is here, you can also view two prints of Hokusai’s work, “The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” and “Mt. Fuji from Kajikazawa.” Both are included in the Museum’s permanent collections and are currently on view in the Cultures Gallery on the second level.

Photorealist painter Stephanie Schechter is on view in the 3 AMERICANS exhibition through 26 April.

Schechter’s work displays her natural gift for observation, finding beauty and intrigue within the utilitarian American landscape. Take, for example, "Thrift”. In this piece, Schechter meticulously sorts through the real and the hyperreal to create an image burdened by industrial failure but relieved from its earthly flaws like dents and erosion. With a considered and bold palette, Schechter brings levity and brightness to the work that challenges our perception of these humble subjects. Schechter’s dutiful practice of observing, documenting, sketching, revising, and carefully layering the oil paint is an ode to the overlooked.
