Arnot Art Museum The Arnot Art Museum is a landmark jewel of the art world in downtown Elmira, New York USA. Matthias H.

The Arnot Art Museum is a landmark jewel of the art world in downtown Elmira, New York. Housed in the 1833 neo-classical Arnot family mansion, it is one of the last remaining private art collections formed in the 19th century still exhibited in its original showcase. Arnot added a picture gallery in the 1890โ€™s and bequeathed his home and collection in 1910 to become the Arnot Art Museum, which opened to the public three years later. A 1985 addition by Graham Gund Associates provides additional exhibition galleries. The Museum displays a Permanent Collection of 17th - to 19th โ€“century European paintings, 19th- through 21st- century American art and collections of Asian and Egyptian artifacts. Temporary exhibitions highlight various aspects of the collections and include works from museums around the world.

By counting the treeโ€™s rings, the crew was able to identify it as a basswood estimated to be 120โ€“130 years old. That means this tree was likely planted during the lifetime of our founder, Matthias H. Arnot, making the farewell more poignant.

Itโ€™s not often that the Museum says goodbye to one of its treasures, but today, the majestic basswood tree that has graced the South Lawn for decades is coming down, having reached the end of its natural life.

This magnificent tree once cast its generous shade over the Arnot portico and the iconic ๐˜‹๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด sculpture nearby. Countless visitors have rested beneath its branches, and generations of children have played around its base.

As we bid farewell to this beloved tree, we look forward to discovering just how old it was. Though it will be missed, its place in the Museumโ€™s history and in our shared memories will endure.

This regional juried exhibition showcases an expansive range of artistic expression. Bringing together artists from across the region, the exhibition highlights diverse approaches, materials, and perspectives, offering visitors an exciting look at the breadth and vitality of contemporary regional art.

Seventy works by the 46 artists honored are on view in the Center and West Wing Galleries. We will be spotlighting individual works over the course of the exhibition, but the best way to appreciate the distinct and diverse talent represented is to visit in person.
