The El Paso Museum of History and the NAACP El Paso Branch Unit 6175 are pleased to present “Where It Began: Civil Rights & the El Paso Branch of the NAACP”, a new pop-up exhibition housed at the El Paso Museum of History (510 N Santa Fe St). The pop-up will open on Wednesday, September 30, coinciding with the 2026 NAACP State Convention, which this year is taking place in El Paso.

Established in 1914, the El Paso Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was the first chapter chartered in the state of Texas. Dr. Lawrence A. Nixon, one of the El Paso NAACP’s founding members, became a key figure in the Texas Civil Rights movement as he challenged racist voting laws through the courts. The pop-up highlights key events and figures in Black El Pasoans’ fight for equality and freedom.

“Where It Began” runs from Wednesday, September 30th through Sunday, November 8th.

This exhibition is presented with support from City Representative Chris Canales, District 8.

Led by puppeteer and artist Anthony Michael Stokes (Kessto Kreatures), this camp will explore history of El Paso through the art of puppetry. Over the course of the week, participants will learn foundational puppetry techniques and will go through the complete lifecycle of puppet creation. Participants will also learn more about designing, building, scripting, and performing/recording a short work. At the end of the week, participants will film shorts that will later be edited and will debut on the El Paso Museum of History’s social media as “On Little Barrio Street,” a borderland spin on Sesame Street. The content and puppets will be based on the history of Segundo Barrio and its role as a home for generations of Mexican, Black, East Asian, and Lebanese-Syrian El Pasoans.

The terms curanderismo (holistic healing) and brujería (folk magic) encompass a wide range of spiritual and healing practices in Mexico that combine Asian, African, Indigenous Mexican and American, and European traditions. As a predominantly oral tradition, curanderismo and brujería practices can vary significantly between practitioners. Frontera Esoterica explores the Paso del Norte’s traditions of folk magic and spirituality through regional art, artifacts, herbs, and other mystical ephemera. The exhibition will feature original artwork from artists such as David Gremard Romero, Gustavo Marquez, Ome Tlaloc, and more. The exhibition will showcase the history of midwifery in the region and highlight historical folk figures like Teresa Urrea and Don Pedrito Jaramillo alongside the stories of local families who have practiced these traditions for generations.

Adobe-Making Workshop

📆 Saturday, August 29
⏰1 pm - 3 pm
📍El Paso Museum of History
🎟️ Free with Registration
👧🏽👦🏻All ages

Join us for an adobe-making workshop led by Ome Tekuani Tlaloc! During this two-hour workshop, participants will learn more the history of adobe and its use in our region. They will also have the opportunity to create their own mini-casitas using pre-made adobe bricks. Adobe is traditional construction material made using clay, water, sand, and grass or straw. Its documented use in construction dates back centuries in the Southwest and was commonly used in El Paso for buildings until the late 1800s. As a construction material, adobe is extremely durable and energy efficient, providing heat resistance during hot summers. In last few decades, there has been a renewed interest in utilizing adobe for modern construction due to it being a renewable resource with low environmental impact. By end of the session, participants can expect to know more about best practices, local history, Indigenous knowledge, and sustainability.

Come learn more and get inspired!

About the Instructor
Ome Tekuani Tlaloc is a Chicano artist and culture bearer from Little Red Sands in El Paso, TX. His work focuses on honoring and understanding the relationship between people and plants in our desert region. In addition to his work returning adobe techniques to the Paso del Norte area, his practice includes traditional basketry, stonework, jewelry, and herbal remedies. Ome’s knowledge of adobe was passed down to him from his grandparents, who were raised in family-built adobe homes.
