Today there are 11 Field of Stars flags on display at a local school.
Since yesterday, students have logged over 70 scans. Since we started in 2023, students have registered over 5,600 scans!
Today's leaderboard shows Congressman Silvestre Reyes as the top flag with 14 scans. Students are learning about his life of service and being the first Mexican American elected to represent the 16th Congressional District. They can also read about the lives of others who believe in serving their communities.
Sadly, 40% of students in the US don't have schoolbooks in their classrooms with stories about leaders who look like them. This is a glaring deficit at a time when students are look for meaning so that they can understand their roles in the world.
Alongside Congressman Reyes, other leaders in the exhibit and their fields of endeavor are:
-Susana Reza - serving individuals and families in crisis for 40 years
-Iliana Limon Romero - leader in sports journalism
-Little Joe Hernandez - Grammy-award winning Tejano pioneer
-Lawrence Nixon - voting rights in Texas
-Rosa Guerrero - culture keeper/educator in folklorico traditions
-Carmen Felix - decent housing, neighborhood preservation
-Hon. Alicia Chacon - trailblazer in politics and public service
-David Livingston Carrasco - coaching/mentoring young people
-Danny Olivas - astronaut and engineer
-Carmen Rodriguez - attorney & activist for working people
