The work connects the landscapes of the border region with ecological memory, cycles of transformation, and histories of labor and consumption.

On view until Dec 12, 2026.

Art, memory, and resistance through textile.

In Modesta Ávila, artist Tania Candiani revisits the story of a Mexican American folk heroine who resisted the expansion of the Santa Fe Railway across her land in Orange County, California.

Through machine embroidery, cotton, stitching, and text, Candiani transforms Ávila’s story into a reflection on land, labor, and resistance. The artwork connects an everyday domestic gesture—the clothesline—to a powerful history of challenging the forces that reshape our territories and communities.

Discover this work and more in Costuras Territoriales, on view at the Rubin Center through December 12, 2026.

What happens when the familiar starts to feel strange?

Drawn from the Rubin Center collection, this exhibition brings together photography, textiles, sculpture, prints, and painting to explore how objects shift in meaning, value, and identity. Through changes in context, material, and perspective, the works invite us to reconsider what we value, preserve, discard, and remember.

Developed by Rubin Center interns under the curatorial leadership of Henry Alfonso Schulte.

Visit the Rubin Center and experience the exhibition in person.

BORDER QUIPU / QUIPU FRONTERIZO

What do you think when you cross the border?

Beginning in 2016, Tanya Aguiñiga and the AMBOS team invited people crossing the U.S./Mexico border to answer this question by tying two strands of recycled textile into a knot. Together, thousands of these knots form Border Quipu, a collective record of the emotions, experiences, and stories connected to crossing the border.

The project continues in 2026 with two new quipus created in Ciudad Juárez and Agua Prieta.

Visit the Rubin Center to experience Border Quipu as part of AMBOS.
