Welcome to November and BIG THANK YOU to all the folks that enjoyed the almost constant educational outreach in October. Even with a soggy one day Fall Festival, we still totaled up over 1100 outreach guests (not including regular museum visits). October is always our best month!! But we have more planned for November. Thanks again to all our helpers and attendees in October.

We have an upcoming workshop on Nov. 12th, 4:30-7:30pm to learn how to make Pine Needle Baskets. Instructor Debra Rantanen will facilitate the hands-on workshop. In 2024 she shared the same class at the Patawomeck Museum & Cultural Center in Fredericksburg, and we are excited to share this educational opportunity with our local community. Please email to register since the class size is limited, [email protected] and bring your own scissors. All other supplies will be provided. Suggested donation for the workshop is $25.

This evening was the Annual Event, "History is Served" by the Museum of Western Virginia. It was hosted at Hotel Roanoke and featured our friend Gabe Neville sharing history on the local men of the 8th Virginia during the American Revolution. Special Thank you to one of our museum donors for inviting me to enjoy the event with them since they are also supporters of that Museum too. It was a very nice event and lovely venue and staff at Hotel Roanoke.

Thank you to Va Tech's Outreach and International Affairs for the invitation to present at the We Impact Virginia Summit in Abingdon today. The keynote speaker, Professor Amy Clark from the University of Virginia at Wise delivered a wonderful talk on "voiceplace" and our Appalachian dialect. Now I must read her book entitled, Talking Appalachian, published in 2013 by the University of Kentucky Press. All of us in public museums across Central Appalachia know that our dialect is a daily Talking point with visitors to the region. Our museum presentation was on the impact of sharing local VA250 History from the stories of participants from the Revolutionary timeframe from what was then part of Fincastle County, but now Southwest Virginia. It was a nice audience and we appreciate being a part of the event. And as always, Go Hokies!!

If you find yourself near Abingdon on Tuesday, please consider taking part in the "We Impact Virginia" Summit hosted by Virginia Tech's Outreach and International Affairs. Our museum will be featured along with our VA250 programs. But our friend Benjamin Jackson will also be presenting about the enslaved fingerprints project he is involved with. It should be a nice outreach and Abingdon and all of Southwest Virginia will be beautiful with the fall colors. Our museum appreciates being a part of this year's summit.
