The Hance-Alexander House, originally two structures dating back to the early 1800s, was purchased by the New River Historical Society in the 1980s and transformed into the current Wilderness Road Regional Museum. The museum now houses exte

nsive archives, family research, and library, and features permanent displays such as the recreated 19th century country store as well as temporary displays on topics such as fashion, women's handiwork, and the area now covered by Claytor Lake. We also offer tours of outbuildings on the grounds (kitchen, granary, loom house, barn, and buggy shed).

Today we were down at Ingles Tavern for a meeting and to do a little prep for a future exhibit. But we caught sight of something that typically doesn't cross Ingles Ferry. Thousands of settlers crossed at this location heading west and many thousands of Indigenous people would have also used this same point to cross generations before European settlers arrived in the New River Valley. But this morning we noticed the Goodyear Blimp floating above the crossing. We will hopefully have some upcoming news to share about our other transportation related project we are working. Until then enjoy the blimp at Ingles Ferry.

We opened up special again today to welcome our friends from the Floyd Court House DAR Chapter. They seemed to really enjoy our museum and our new exhibit on local Revolutionary War soldiers. They were also very excited to have lunch at the Mason Jar, which we always recommend and just minutes away from Newbern. So if your group is looking for a nice outing we got you covered along the Wilderness Road, email to set up a group tour, [email protected]

Today we opened up special to welcome a group of cyclists from Williamsburg traveling the Virginia segements of the Bike 76 Route. They are doing this as part of the 250th and we are just so happy they included us in their plans. We shared our entire museum site with them along with the Bike 76 poster exhibit about the history along the route prepared by VT student Grace Kostrzebski. We also displayed our new "Welcome Cyclists" signage about the Great Road which was fresh off the presses and funded by a Bike 76 PEDAL grant. We expect more cyclists this year and throughout the 250th Commemoration and can't wait to welcome them to Historic Newbern. Not all of them will get a special gun salute to start off their next leg of the trip but we thought the folks today would enjoy that and they did indeed. What a fun bunch!!! Many of the group had the VA250 passport, which we missed inclusion on but being a home of a Rev War veteran we are just going to hand out our stickers versus doing a stamp so that offer goes for others as well just show us your VA250 passport when you visit.

We heard that Tories have been meeting along Peak Creek planning raids on the Lead Mines while others are counterfeiting bills trying to undermine the economy of the Patriots along the Great Road. Please join us next Sunday as we attempt to round them up during our Annual "Loyalists in the Backcountry" event. On Saturday the Fincastle Company will be at the museum doing living history 11-4, on Sunday 11-4, we will share more on actual events that occurred in our area between local Tories and Patriots. The red ribbons on caps will help you identify the rascals to keep your eyes on.

Pulaski County High School hosted their graduation last week, but we wanted to send our congratulations to several of those graduates that live in and around Historic Newbern. Each of these young adults have been involved with our museum in some fashion over the years and we wish them much success on their next steps.
