November 6: Addie Levy & Gravel Road Reunion

Radford native Addie Levy has emerged as a true multi-talent in the world of music, captivating audiences with her mandolin, voice, songwriting, and fiddling skills. By age 10, she had already embarked on her musical journey, guided by local mentors who imparted the art of Appalachian Old Time, Gospel, and Bluegrass music to her eager spirit. As the years unfurled, she masterfully added guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and upright bass to her arsenal, solidifying her status as a prodigious utility musician. As she enters her 23nd year, Addie continues to tread a path that resonates with tradition while fostering evolution. In 2024, Addie joined in with The Brothers Comatose, an internationally touring bluegrass band from California. In 2025 they released their first album with Addie, titled “Golden Grass” featuring her on mandolin, harmonies, and singing her own song “Blue Mountain."

There will be a free public reception on Sunday, October 25, from 1 to 2:30 PM.

The exhibition “Answering the Call” is composed of images from the collection of Radford’s Harvey-Howe-Carper Post 30 of the American Legion. The exhibition of over thirty photographs will be available for viewing at Glencoe Mansion from October 14 through November 1.

This Day in Wharton History

Join us each week as we learn what Gabe and Nannie were doing and thinking in this day in the 1860s during the Civil War.

On October 13, 1864, Gabe wrote to Nannie about the decimation the North was leaving in its wake during the War. He wrote: “We left New Market yesterday morning, & marched [to] [Fishers Hill] about noon to-day. Nothing of interest occurred on the route, the Yankees having gone. We found the ruins of houses & barns, corn fields used up &c.“ Pictured is this event in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864, courtesy National Parks Service.

As we discussed last week, throughout the War getting supplies and materials was tough in the South. Especially due to the blockade on the Confederate States, but also because of the destruction left behind as soldiers marched through areas. Both sides used supplies, and the North even destroyed supplies, storehouses, and railways on their path. This was also a common fear for the families left behind, even here in the New River Valley.

Did you know that yesterday was General Pulaski Memorial Day?

Observed on October 11 each year, it’s a day to commemorate the death of Casimir Pulaski, who our local Pulaski County was named after.

Pulaski was a Polish nobleman who served in the Polish Army. He was a leader in the fight for Polish-Lithuanian independence from Russia, leading a failed rebellion that drove him to exile. He was encouraged by Benjamin Franklin to come to North America, where he joined the American Revolution, becoming a general in the Continental Army. He was a fierce fighter for American independence, creating one of the few calvary units of the Revolutionary War and leading his men into many battles. He was killed in 1779 at the Siege of Savannah, and revered as a hero of the American cause. Over time many places have been named in his honor, including Pulaski County VA.
