This Day in Wharton History

Join us each week as we learn what Gabe and Nannie were doing or thinking on this day in the 1860s.

On September 1, 1863 Gabe was upset that Nannie wasn’t there to meet him at the train station in Millboro. He wrote “The Count will tell you how much disappointed I was on reaching here this morning to find that my orders had been disobeyed & that you were not here to meet me & to go to the Red Sulpher [Springs].” It was revealed to Gabe on September 12 that the reason Nannie hadn’t made it was that Union forces were attacking Dublin and areas of the New River Valley.

On September 4 Cole Ritter will perform

Doors at 5:30 PM | Show starts at 6:00 PM

Cole Ritter is a Nashville-born singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose sound blends gritty country, bluegrass, blues, and surf-western music. Best known for his appearance on season 20 of American Idol, where he was famously dubbed "the Michael Bublé of the guitar." Cole has spent the last 20 years relentlessly honing his craft with national touring acts and performing at venues including the Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Auditorium and Red Rocks. In January 2026 he released his debut solo EP.

This is the Final Week to see the Mary Draper Ingles-themed art show, "Homecoming," running from July 15 to August 28.

For this multi-artist, juried show, art work was chosen that reflects the importance of home, Mary Draper Ingles’ homecoming journey, native agriculture or geological locations along her route, and also the universal importance of home. The 16 artists participating are: Mary Barksdale, Jake Conner, Virginia Dale, Cheng Fen, Matt Gentry, Rebecca Harris, Angela Martin, Mary Moore, Marietta Nester, Martha Olson, Melissa Pilkington, Roberta Sallee, Logan Singo, Sharon Taylor, and Susan Trulove. This year’s collection of works feature a diverse array of painting, paper, fabric, and photographic mediums that are both realistic and abstract in styles, highlighting the creativity of both emerging and established local artists.

You never know what might be hiding in a framed picture. As we were working on some framed photographs from the American Legion Collection, we discovered that the backer-boards were incredibly interesting pictures themselves.
