Henry Mercer: Historian, archaeologist, and… media critic?

As we close out National Trust for Historic Preservation's Preservation Month, we thought it apropos to share a note scribbled by our founder Henry Mercer in a March 1927 issue of “The American Mercury” magazine. His comments appear above an article called “Think Stuff Unwanted" in which a reporter laments that his superiors don’t care for stories about economics and politics and instead just want pieces about “women, liquor, wealth, religion, science, and immorality.”

Henry Mercer wrote his opinion at the top of the page: “Every N.Y. Herald Tribune proves this every night. What will be the result of all this in 50 years? Is there any cure?” Imagine what Mercer would think to know that people are still asking these questions almost a century later!

We are officially 4 weeks away from the return of Movies at the Mercer 📽️ Join us on Thursday, June 25 as we kick off the series with "A Minecraft Movie," a colorful and bold big-screen adventure for the entire family!

From Jared Hess, the director of "Napoleon Dynamite," and based on the popular video game centered around using one’s imagination to craft a cubic wonderland, four misfits are transported to the magical world of Minecraft. While there, their creativity will be essential to their survival as their quest back home involves evil Piglins, Zombies, plenty of building, and an encounter with an expert crafter played by Jack Black.

This outdoor film series, presented in collaboration with The County Theater and Shankweiler's Drive-In Theatre is FREE and open to all - register in advance here: https://www.mercermuseum.org/moviesatthemercer
