The Young Friends of the Michener went behind the scenes with Philadelphia ceramicist Roberto Lugo last Friday at his new studio.

Roberto shared the story of how he got started in art, and showed us works of various scales, from pieces he would sell at studio sales (like mugs and teapots) to museum-quality artworks.

Roberto is passionate about making art accessible to everyone, and he’s also passionate about uplifting the faces and stories of underrepresented peoples in his artwork, often depicting African American and Latinx icons in different ways. Thank you to Roberto and his studio for the VIP tour!

Jumping into September with a moment for these sunflowers in all their glory. They steal the show in “The Short Line” garden for its last growing season, planted in the footprint of three original jail cells of the 1884 Bucks County Jail. Once a jail cell, now a garden. Once the Bucks County Jail, now the Michener Art Museum.
“The Short Line” by artist one M two L’s is part of “Behind These Walls: Reckoning with Incarceration,” a multi-year initiative at the Michener that confronts the site’s former life as a county jail. “Behind These Walls: Reckoning with Incarceration” has been supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.

If you think you know Pennsylvania Impressionism, you're not going to want to miss this new exhibition!

"Abstractions of Nature: Quarries and Industry in Pennsylvania Impressionism" features the "poetic charm" of industrial sites in paintings by Daniel Garber, Charles Rosen, and more New Hope School artists. It wasn't just rural landscapes for the Pennsylvania Impressionists—quarries and factories here in the Delaware Valley gave new possibilities for their canvases.

The exhibition opens Labor Day weekend on Saturday, September 5 with 14 artists on view, including William Lathrop, Letitia Maxwell Ely, Roy C. Nuse, Edward Redfield, Bernard Badura, Walter Baum, George Sotter, R.A.D. Miller, Arthur Meltzer, and John Folinsbee. Read more: https://bit.ly/4gXx6y8

In “Miracles and Glory Abound,” vanessa german Vanessa German injects Emanuel Leutze’s iconic visualization of Washington Crossing the Delaware with a new narrative celebrating Black womanhood.

To create her figures and sculptural installations, german collects and combines found objects that express a spiritual and emotional power, recalling minkisi, or sculptures inhabited with spirits, used throughout the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Miracles and Glory Abound imagines a monument—a boat with “LaQuisha Washington Crossing the Day Aware” taking the place of George Washington—centering a city park inhabited by otherworldly figures. By taking a kernel of truth about a historic event, much like Leutze did, and making the story her own, german creates a conversation about public memory and the power of storytelling.

“Pieces of a Life” is the first time Bruce Katsiff’s collaborative prints are on view, only through Sunday August 2! These artworks were made by Katsiff Bruce F Katsiff and a number of artist friends, who edited and embellished platinum prints from the Nature Morte series. “I love these because they bring the best of Bruce’s photography into direct contact with his other legacy—a rich network of artists in and around Bucks County,” said guest curator Dorothy Fisher.

For this project, Katsiff looked to Bucks County modernists Louis Stone (1902-1984), Charles Evans (1907-1992), and Charles Ramsey (1875-1951), who responded to the improvisational and collaborative nature of jazz music by co-creating artworks during visual “jam sessions.” Unlike the earlier artists who worked in tandem on a piece, Katsiff’s collaborators responded to finished photographs with interventions in other media.

The resulting prints are both constructed and cultivated: Katsiff trusts his friends to build on what he has created. He activated a wide network of artist friends for this series, including artists Paula Chamlee, Ed Colker, Robert Dodge, Gwendolyn Kermber, Elaine Galen, Thomas Shillea, and Ricardo Viera.
