"Misty Boathouses in Flåm" is now available on my Etsy store.
We were leaving Flåm, Norway, on a fjord cruise toward Bergen when I began watching the shoreline for one last photograph of the village. I wanted to capture something that showed the connection between everyday life in Flam and the water that surrounds it, rather than another wide view of the fjord.
It was a misty morning, and because we were already underway, I had no control over where or when I could stop to make a photograph. The shoreline was passing by, the light was subdued, and I knew that anything I saw would give me only a short opportunity to compose and capture it before our boat moved on.
As we passed the harbor, I spotted this row of red boathouses sitting directly at the water's edge. Small boats floated in front of them, the forested hillside rose immediately behind them, and the mist softened the upper trees. For a brief moment, the water was calm enough to reflect the boathouses below. I made the photograph as we passed, capturing a simple part of Flam that I might easily have missed if I hadn't been watching the shoreline as we left.
