Today we remember Trooper First Class William Mayer - William and his partner stopped the driver of a pickup truck to warn him that his taillight was not working. William was northbound on U.S. Route 13 at Smyrna, near Duck Creek Bridge, when a tractor-trailer struck the vehicle he had stopped, pinning him between the two. The driver of the tractor-trailer had been drinking and fell asleep at the wheel before striking William and killing him. The driver of the vehicle that struck William was convicted of manslaughter. As his wife Ria said “Those short years were so happy for both of us. We hoped for a long life – to grow old together. It wasn’t to be…I know he was proud to be a Delaware State Policeman and loved his work. But…he was much too young to die.”

We often get asked what we do with all the items we receive and collect. We store items in our archive, and when we have an idea, we review what we have and put a display together. For example, we received a donation from Trooper Dennis Kelly's family: his log book and flight suit, and we wanted to display them. So we paired it with a Troop 4 (Georgetown) sign, a flight helmet from the era when Kelly was flying, and a photo from an album of aviation photos that was given to us showing Kelly taking his last flight as a Trooper. By themselves, these items might not make an informative display, but together they tell a story and show the history of the Delaware State Police. Delaware State Police Aviation Section

Today we remember Corporal Christopher Shea, 31, who died in the line of duty on Sunday, July 18th, 2004

A car that had been involved in a hit and run accident was driving northbound on the southbound side of Route 1. Christopher was driving into Sussex County to assist, and he had not heard dispatch make the broadcast about the car traveling in the opposite direction on Route 1, since each county at that time broadcast on a different channel. As Christopher rounded a bend on Route 1, he tried to avoid the car traveling in the wrong direction that came into view at the last minute, but the two vehicles hit head-on. The collision instantly killed the driver of the other car. Christopher was taken to Milford Memorial, where he was pronounced dead. The driver who killed Christopher was a repeat drunk driver. “There are not enough words in the world to say how proud I am of Chris,” said Tim Shea, Chris’s younger brother.
