On October 12, 1864, Harper Hospital opened as a general military hospital for wounded Civil War soldiers. Occupying the same site as the modern hospital on the east side of Woodward Ave., it was built on land donated by wealthy Detroiter Walter Harper.

On October 11, 1902, the Wayne County Building was dedicated in a ceremony held by the Detroit Bar Association. This postcard shows the building from Cadillac Square, facing east from Campus Martius. Streetcars, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, the Monroe Block and Russell House are all visible.

On October 10, 1968, the Detroit Tigers clinched World Series victory in a dramatic game seven victory against the St. Louis Cardinals. This photo shows the celebration in downtown Detroit in the days after the win.

On October 8, 1846, Detroit's Elmwood Cemetery opened. It is the oldest continuously-operating non-denominational cemetery in Michigan. This ca. 1914 postcard shows a view of the grounds with a bridge in the foreground, a fountain, two grave markers and three people.

On October 7, 1889, the cornerstone was laid at the First Presbyterian Church in Detroit. This program includes engravings, speeches and remarks from Hon. D. Bethune Duffield, Rev. Howard Duffield, Rev. R. H. Leonard, Hon. Alanson Sheley, Rev. Wallace Radcliffe and Rev. Marcus A. Brownson.

On October 5, 1975, a historic marker was dedicated at Fannie Richards' home site near Lafayette Park. Detroit's first African American school teacher, Richards began teaching in city schools in 1865 and fought against racial segregation in the school system. In 1871, she was appointed to teach at the newly-integrated Everett Elementary School, where she served for 44 years. Learn more via Historic Elmwood Cemetery & Foundation.

On October 4, 1973, three workers were pictured on the deck of a Dunbar & Sullivan Company barge, laying an underwater telephone cable across the Trenton Channel of the lower Detroit River. The shoreline and the tugboat Paddy Miles can be seen in the background.
