🎉 Welcome back, Hamtramck Public Schools! We were honored to join this year’s Hamtramck Public Schools Welcome Back Breakfast as a community partner, thanks to the kind invitation from Jeremy Hein, Educational Technology Instructional Coach.
Bright and early this morning we were setup and ready to share information about our work with teachers and staff and connect with educators looking for meaningful ways to enhance their students’ learning experiences. Many of the teachers were exploring ways to be more inclusive of their Ukrainian born pupils attending local schools.
We were also glad to be alongside so many wonderful community and cultural partners, including the Hamtramck Historical Museum, the DIA Education Department, The Henry Ford Michigan Invention Convention, Buffalo Prescott, Detroit Public Theatre, Passengers, Piast, and the InterFaith Leadership Council of Metro Detroit.
We wish all HPS teachers, staff, and students a safe, successful, and fruitful new academic year! 📚✨

Since 2012, Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Bloomberg Arts Internship (BAI) program has helped high school students gain paid summer work experience in the arts while strengthening cultural organizations in major U.S. cities. Nationally, BAI has supported more than 2,250 paid internships, with recent materials noting 400 interns this summer alone. The program launched in Detroit in 2024 with 25 interns placed at 11 worksites, and we are proud that our museum, UAAM, was selected as one of those worksites. For 8 weeks this summer, we had the pleasure of hosting two students, Siam Ahmed and D’Ani Charles, who gained firsthand experience with nonprofit museum & archival work. Thanks to their contributions, they scanned and documented many historic photographs and community publications that will be included in our upcoming exhibit highlighting the Ukrainian American immigration story in Michigan. Through CultureSource, they also benefited from mentorship, college readiness support, and exposure to pathways into the creative workforce. Thank you to BAI, CultureSource and of course our 2026 interns for allowing us to participate in this vital program.
З 2012 року програма Bloomberg Arts Internship (BAI) від Bloomberg Philanthropies надає старшокласникам оплачуваний літній досвід роботи у сфері мистецтва та підтримує культурні організації у великих містах США. У Детройті програма розпочалася у 2024 році з 25 стажерами в 11 культурних установах, обраних для участі в цьому проєкті, і ми пишаємося, що наш музей UAAM був одним із них.
І знову цього літа ми протягом 8 тижнів ми прийняли двох стажер— Siam Ahmed та D’Ani Charles, які здобули практичний досвід музейної, архівної та неприбуткової роботи. Завдяки їхній допомозі було відскановано й задокументовано історичні світлини та громадські видання для нашої майбутньої виставки про історію українсько-американської імміграції в Мічигані. Щиро дякуємо BAI, CultureSource та нашим стажерам 2026 року за можливість долучитися до цієї важливої програми.

Thank you to the organizers of the Annual Picnic of the Ukrainian Selfreliance Michigan Federal Credit Union for welcoming us and giving us the opportunity to share our mission with the community. We are grateful for your support of our work through our fundraiser, “Spin to Win.”
The game was a big hit with our younger visitors, who brought plenty of smiles to our table.
We truly appreciate everyone who stopped by, participated, donated, and offered words of encouragement.

We’re excited to revive our ORAL HISTORY initiative as part of this fall’s exhibit on the Ukrainian American immigrant story in Michigan (America250MI).
On July 31, we welcomed Melania Sarachman Smith and Pamela Lasazen, who are documenting their families’ journeys to the U.S. and have signed up to share their stories through our oral history project.
One part of Melania’s family settled in Muskegon Heights, joining a small Ukrainian community working in western Michigan - they worked in the local steel, tool & die, and carpentry industries. She shared photos from the Ukrainian Catholic Church of St. Nicholas along with photos from the 1927 Ukrainian Workers Children’s school founded there.
Pamela shared documentation and photos from her grandmother and step grandfather’s life histories – the Lyszczysyn & Muzychka (Muzyck) family. Grandmother Amelia arrived to Detroit in 1914 and was actively involved in the growth of the parish of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic church on Clippert Avenue as well as being one of the founders of UNWLA Branch 23.

Ми раді відновити нашу ініціативу усної історії в межах осінньої виставки про історію українсько американської іміграції в Мічигані (America250MI).
31 липня ми зустрілися з Меланією Сарахман Сміт та Памелою Ласазен, які досліджують історії своїх родин та долучилися до нашого проєкту усної історії.
Частина родини Меланії оселилася в Мускіґон Гайтс (Muskegon Heights, Michigan), приєднавшись до невеликої української громади, що працювала в місцевих галузях сталі, інструментального виробництва та столярства. Вона поділилася світлинами з Української католицької церкви Святого Миколая, а також фотографіями зі створеної там у 1927 році Української робітничої дитячої школи.
Памела представила документи та світлини з життєписів своєї бабусі та вітчима — родин Лисчишин і Музичка (Muzyck). Її бабуся Амелія прибула до Детройта у 1914 році та активно долучалася до розвитку парафії Української католицької церкви Святого Івана Хрестителя на Кліпперт Авеню, а також була однією із засновниць Відділу 23 УНО.

Lunchtime adventures with our summer interns
Exploring Hamtramck Disneyland
Dmytro Szylak, a Ukrainian immigrant and longtime GM worker, spent nearly 30 years transforming two of his Hamtramck garages into the whimsical wonderland known as Hamtramck Disneyland. Filled with spinning kinetic sculptures, bright stripes, and a collage of Americana and memories of Ukraine, his creation became a beloved local landmark.
After Mr. Szylak’s passing in 2015, Hatch Art took ownership in 2016 and continues to repair, preserve, and gently update the installation —keeping it as lively and imaginative as he always did. Hamtramck Disneyland — Hatch Art https://www.hatchart.org/hamtramck-disneyland

We were also invited to visit the community art center created by WOB (Women of Banglatown) in the recently refurbished building on the corner of Joseph Campau & Holbrook.

Пригоди під час обідньої перерви з нашими літніми інтернами Досліджуємо Гамтрамкський Діснейленд
Дмитро Шилак, український іммігрант і багаторічний працівник компанії GM, майже 30 років перетворював два свої гаражі в Гемтремку на химерну країну чудес, відому як «Гемтремкський Діснейленд». Наповнена рухомими кінетичними скульптурами, яскравими смугами та колажем американської культури й спогадів про Україну, його творча інсталяція стала улюбленою місцевою пам’яткою.
Після його в 2015 році організація Hatch Art перейняла інсталяцію у 2016 му й далі веде ремонти та дбайливо оновлює інсталяцію — підтримуючи її такою ж живою, якою пан Шилак її створив.

Нас також запросили відвідати громадський арт-центр, створений WOB (Women of Banglatown), у нещодавно оновленому приміщенні.
Women of Banglatown (WOB) — це районна неприбуткова організація, що працює у сфері мистецтва та добробуту спільноти. Вона підтримує дівчат і молодих жінок першого покоління та іммігранток віком 10–26 років у районах Банглатаун і Гамтрамк у Детройті та Гамтрамку.

Thank you to the Bloomfield Township Public Library for inviting us to share an overview of "The Art of the Ukrainian Pysanka" on July 22. We were delighted to welcome 40 registered attendees! After the presentation, guests explored examples of traditional pysanky along with books from our library and collection.
A special thank you to our board member Donna Voronovich for helping us connect with so many wonderful participants.

Дякуємо Публічній бібліотеці містечка Блумфілд за запрошення представити й провести огляд «Мистецтва української писанки» 22 липня. На презентацію зареєструвалися 40 учасників, а після завершення вони мали можливість переглянути зразки писанок та книжки з нашої бібліотеки й колекції. Наша членкиня правління Донна Воронович допомогла нам встановити зв’язок із багатьма присутніми.

Summer is for new learning and new adventures — and today, our archives are a full house! Our two Bloomberg Arts Interns, Siam and Dani, selected by BAI and CultureSource as incoming high school seniors from the Detroit Public Schools system, have already been with us for two weeks.
In that short time, they have scanned valuable historical photographs from St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church on Clippert Street, the first Ukrainian Byzantine Rite Catholic church in Southeast Michigan.
We are also grateful for our collaboration with the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus Archival Project, now coordinated by Bohdan Pryjma. This summer, Khrystyna Masnytska and Olivia Karanec are making great progress on their archival work and scanning photographs from past tours.
Thank you all for sharing your summer with us and for learning the valuable work of museums and archives. We are so glad to have you here!
Літо — це час для нового навчання та нових пригод, і сьогодні в наших архівах справді людно! Наші двоє стажерів Bloomberg Arts Interns, Сіам і Дані, яких BAI та CultureSource обрали як учнів системи Detroit Public Schools, що переходять до 11-го клясу.
За цей короткий час вони оцифрували цінні історичні фотографії з Української католицької церкви Святого Івана Хрестителя на вулиці Кліпперт — першої української католицької церкви в Південно-Східному Мічигані.
Ми також вдячні за співпрацю з Архівним проєктом Української капели бандуристів, який нині координує Богдан Прийма. Цього літа Христина Масницька та Олівія Каранець досягають значного поступу в архівній роботі та оцифровують фотографії з минулих гастрольних турів.
