Had a chance to roll out into yesterday’s beautiful sun and made may way down to the to check out the recently opened . The stock holding area of the once Hog Slauter House had lost its roof decades ago and has been beautifully repurposed into a fascinating outdoor courtyard that I am sure will be packed come next summer. I was amazed to see the roof joist used to be inset into the brick wall which followed the pitch of the 1-beam still standing. While I was there, I met a Lady form Brooklyn who convinced me that Detroit was, “finally on its way back”, mentioning “in Brooklyn they seem to get it a lot quicker than they do here” and was very optimistic about the city’s slow-paced rebirth -> future. For me I couldn’t help but remember my training and thought to myself if they can turn a slaughter house into a must visit placed filled with all sorts of peeps, (repurpose instead of replace) why can’t the people in charge of the propaganda get a clue and quite talking about 1.2 Billion “brownfield” nonsense? I still remember when GM paid 100’s of millions of dollars to move the cooling towers from the front of the Ren. Cen. to the top of the building, instead of paying their stock holders increased dividend’s. A wasted expense with GM’s abandonment and relocation, why? From there I spun out east down one of the best bike streets in the city and made may way over to to once again delight in the Moroccan Architectural influence.

Headed out yesterday afternoon to take a ride through the Ancient Palmer Park Forest to enjoy the colors of change into fall. Headed east across Woodward at the light onto Nevada Street to go and visit “Nevada”, (thanks for the soup, it was awesome)! While there I got a message form the Moun-Mon who was out in his light blue classic pick-up truck, I suggested be meet at the in so he could enjoy the amazing that I have recently re-discovered? He rolled up just after I sat down in the front seating area. From the amazing smells wafting up from the south on Joesph Campau, to the lady’s out walking in traditional Muslim wear, the evening prayer songs, to the Halloween costumed patrons arriving frequently, to all the different folks walking down the sidewalks along the street, to the Hardwear store next door, Beautiful.

I explained to the Moun that I have studied most of my life, from the simple Village to City, from Cart to Wagon to Car, Hamtramck makes sense to ANYONE who choose to live there. As the night wore on, I had to swizzle through the empty streets for a brief stop at the to take in the night-sights out in the Back garden.

P.S. the railroad easement that the folks at the JLG were thinking about using to continue the path on the North side of McNichols is still an active rail line with tracks in place, meaning Nope!

Saturdays ride was inspired by a friend from the UK who called to tell me that Detroit has 1 true/authentic English pub and it is called Located in the original sacred French designed "Grand Circus Park" section of . On my way down I had to first stop at the newly re-imagined I had not rolled through since it was completed and figured now was the perfect time to do so. The riverwalks expansion is magnificent and endlessly filled with people, so many that bike riding at any sort of pace is dangerous to the pedestrians. With that in mine I got off the riverwalk at the old Joe Louis Arena location, (given to investment bankers from New York as a payoff from the city’s bankruptcy) and was delighted to see more of New York styled architecture facing the river front. Beautiful modern design residential development in Detroit, in-spite of itself.

Outside of the Loan Goat There is no bike parking, so I hitched up to an old cast iron streetlight, walked in and met Terra. I told her my story, and she said she was the person that spoke to my friend [email protected] who is planning on coming to Detroit next July to hold a series of Pop ups thought the city, stay tuned! On the way back north, I remember what bike riding back out of the city was like 25-years ago rolling with big Mike. Blasting north on 2nd Ave. we were always relieved to roll up and over the old rail road tracks just south of Palmer Park. Saturday the Bump was gone as the Joe Lious Greenway folks continue to plod along.

Thanks to Moun-Mon’s invitation I imagined it was 15 years ago (last time I went by bike), and hit the peddles to join him up at to enjoy his good company and arguable drink one of, if not the best b**r in our state of MI. Dripa anyone? The sun was shining as I headed NE through Hazel Park, Madison Hgts. ending up in old "Downtown" Warren MI. I was the only one there by Bike and I truly understand why. The subdivision streets of every city I traveled though are falling apart. Massive cracks between each poured section of concrete, poorly filled with disintegrating asphalt had me wishing for the Full suspension Mountain Bike of yester-year. Car crazy and the car-centric attitude wasn’t the best either, neither of which you will find or experience in Detroit as Everyone gets it when you are on a Bike! It’s always great to see the Moun and met his friend ‘Hoss’ (a Nurse from Windsor) who traveled all the way over to hang with his old friend and join in on the great vibe and always good conversation. On the way back I hit the as Paul and I had enjoyed ourselves there last weekend, so why not. Bike the world and always come back to

To say that we have known about the rails to trails loop around the city for a little while is an understatement. From Ed Woloch taking us down the Dequindre cut in 2006 when it was a still a gravel road/homeless encampment, to our presentation of our master plan for biking in the city to the in 2013 all the way to present day, we have been watching and recording the truth of the process. The slow pace of Corruption continues to slog along decade after decade.

I needed some exercise and headed out yesterday down Rosa Parks Blvd. and Lo and Behold the overpass bridge was finally poured, (took 3-years) so I turned left over M-10 and headed East to see what’s what. Pretty clear and clean until Hamilton Ave. they are still are a very long way from making an “interconnect” to the bridge up & across Woodward. As I approached from the west there were trucks all over the trail and no clear way up/over. I looped around to the north and crossed Woodward @ street level and took the road up to the old (‘New’ but now removed?), Highland Park Highschool. I continued up the road to the east and found a foot path to get around the retainer wall blocks that are being used. As you look back west across Woodward they are at least 1-2 years from completing this “connection”. I turned around and headed east crossing over Oakland Ave. they still have not connected to the street, as quite literally the trail on the east side Leeds to Nowhere. The old railroad line arches to the SE but what you find yourself standing Infront of is a literal Mountain of Broken concrete that won’t be going anywhere soon. The trail continues to Arch and drops off about 4’ onto the old natural stone gravel railroad bed and a passing train rolling by, (this is the primary rail-line NW, running through Ferndale, Royal Oak into to Pontiac) there is no way across and the last time I checked, it takes about 15-years to get permission to build anything in a railroad easement? Stepping over and climbing up Dirt hills I made my way through underpass of I-75. The connection across Dequindre Street is still not complete. Heading NE on the Diag. of the old railroad grade dead ends into McNichols with nothing yet started, planned or even seen on the other side of the street? If you want to turn right onto Joesph Campau and head down the bike lane into Hamtramck cool. But if you look across the to the other side of the abrupt dead end at McNichols, let alone begin to consider the entire 9+ miles around Hamtramck all the way down to the riverfront, the promised 26-mile loop is nothing more than a corrupt pipe dream. One that will never be completed in my lifetime! (Please see our earlier January 2, 2025 post which breaks it all down into cost & numbers, gone where/any left?
In spite of is corruption, at every level.

Brother Paul finally got up and out of Dearborn, (on a weekend no less), to join me on a NE Detroit Full Moon adventure ride, (Hen’s teeth rare)! We rolled north through Ferndale and made our way to where everything was wonderful. The place was filled to capacity with nearby COMMUNITY spilling out into the parking lot and around the East side, almost every table was full. We stumbled upon their very own Octoberfest and even had the authentic costumed band belching out the sounds of Germany. From there we rolled east into Hazel Park where we were invited to a barbeque and to watch the U of M football game. Imagine a room full of ‘Talking Heads” bellering on about every play, (to all of you out there, “where my money at”)? From there we entered into Warren and went down some Architecturally very interesting streets, crossing 8-mile on our way to the (Paul had not been in 6-years). Enjoying all the nice people, we kept on going with our 1 and done approach to our journey this evening. Our goal had always been to loop back around and hit the for their truly Authentic celebration, and boy are we glad we did. The Biergarten was full, people dancing and singing, wearing authentic Munich-type German-clothing, it was a sight to behold. Inside the vibe was filed with town type folks, closer more intimate type seating. Our main man Tony was hard at work.

We headed down into the new and improved where Chyeanne truly was an organic-princess to Paul. As the night moved onto getting quiet and colder, we decided enough was enough and we headed north to the where Paul enjoyed talking to all the ladies! Had a chance to head out mid-afternoon Tuesday, did some more exploring of our vast city. I found an Artist Alley south of Grand River. New concrete and full of work, a miniature Heidelberg if you will. Then stopped at the place it all started 25 years ago, the surrounding landscape sure has changed!

Saturday it rained most of the day so we waited as long as we could and rolled out around 3:30 PM. Moun Mon made his way over from the Eastside to Palmer Park via truck, he was excited to explore what he had been reading about. We rode off (fenders on) and made our way into the ancient forest for a loop. As we headed out of the park between the tennis and pickleball courts straight onto Nevada it started pi***ng rain, so we made a quick right and headed over to the for a full menu sampling while seated at the counter, a V.I.P. Tour provided by our main man Tony and then headed outside for some dry tent time! Choose to end my work early yesterday and rolled south down beautiful streets, ended up at MCB for a brief 1 and done stop and learned that "they really only opened just long enough to supply the Dally in the Alley with B**r", and that "no future plans were made after that". Confirming this, I saw part of the highly touted canning line from back in the day outside abandoned rusting away. Not sure how much longer she is going to last so if you have interest, visit soon. Then had a brief stop at the newly re-opened where the landscape views and traffic patterns sure have changed over the last 7-years.
