We are deeply saddened by the passing of Chairman Emeritus Richard Manoogian.

Richard’s relationship with the DIA spanned more than 60 years, and few individuals have had a greater impact on the museum’s history and success. Through his extraordinary leadership, Richard helped strengthen the DIA’s financial foundation, guided the museum through some of its most consequential periods, and inspired others to invest in its future.

That leadership was matched by the extraordinary generosity of Richard, his family, and Masco Corporation, whose transformative gifts continue to support the museum and its collection. A passionate advocate for American art and a steadfast champion of the DIA’s mission, Richard leaves a lasting legacy.

Before it became the home of the Detroit Film Theatre, this space served as a multi-purpose auditorium within the DIA's original 1927 building. These photos from 1928 show the auditorium shortly after construction, already equipped for the era's newest innovation: "talkies" motion pictures with sound.

More than 50 years after officially becoming the Detroit Film Theatre in 1974, it remains a destination for classic, contemporary, and international cinema.
