Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association Memorial Hall Museum and Library, Deerfield Teachers’ Center, Indian House Memorial Children's Museum and Old Deerfield Craft Fairs

Founded in Deerfield, Massachusetts in 1870 as the first historical society in Western Massachusetts, today the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association is a vibrant regional organization, including the Memorial Hall Museum and Library, Deerfield Teachers’ Center, Indian House Children’s Museum, and Community Outreach projects. The Old Deerfield Craft Fairs (http://www.deerfield-craft.org/) are major fundraisers, supporting all aspects of the organization's work.

“Brewing Massachusetts: How Beer Shaped the Bay State” opened today, Saturday, May 30. See, smell, hear, and feel four centuries of Massachusetts brewing history in a rebuilt colonial tavern. Brewing Massachusetts is located at 107 Old Main Street in Deerfield. Open 11:00-4:30 Fridays-Sundays. $5. FREE for PVMA members, students, and veterans. We are proud to introduce our most ambitious exhibit ever, titled “Brewing Massachusetts: How Beer Shaped the Bay State,” made possible by a grant from Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism (MOTT). This pieced and appliqued quilt was created by either F***y Hoyt Wilson, or her mother Betsy Hoyt Wilson, both of Deerfield, Massachusetts. Piecing involves sewing geometric shapes together. PVMA is very much committed to the business of “memory.” We hope you can visit Memorial Hall Museum this season to view the memories-the mementos. The decoration on this transfer-printed serving dish is referred to as “Chinoiserie.” It is an English version of Chinese designs and was applied with a tissue-printed transfer. It was made in the Enoch Wood factory in the Staffordshire district in England between 1790 and 1820. The motifs include pagodas, flowers, and two Chinese male figures. It was given to Memorial Hall Museum in Deerfield, Massachsuetts, by Eunice K. Brown, a descendant of the Deerfield Nims family. https://americancenturies.org/collection/1880-036-46/

Looking for something to do for Memorial Day weekend? Memorial Hall Museum will be open this Saturday & Sunday, May 23 & 24. The Military Gallery is worth the trip. Hours are 11 am to 4:30 pm on weekends in May, and Tuesday through Sunday from June through October! There is a gift shop too! This head cloth from a set of bed hangings was completed in 1765, by Rebekah Dickinson (1738-1813) and Polly Wright of Hatfield, Massachusetts. Embroidered textiles like this one were popular, originally inspired by the vibrant fabrics English traders brought back from the Far East. The cascading vines, flowers, leaves, birds, animals, and other motifs common in these works allowed the embroiderers to display their technical skills and artistic sensibilities, as well as their ability to devote time to their completion. Women embroidered pockets, petticoats (skirts), and chair seats as well. Though Rebekah was a formally trained maker of women’s clothing none of the garments she created are known to have survived. https://americancenturies.org/collection/2003-58-04/
