Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association Memorial Hall Museum and Library, Deerfield Teachers’ Center, Indian House Memorial Children's Museum and Old Deerfield Craft Fairs

Founded in Deerfield, Massachusetts in 1870 as the first historical society in Western Massachusetts, today the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association is a vibrant regional organization, including the Memorial Hall Museum and Library, Deerfield Teachers’ Center, Indian House Children’s Museum, and Community Outreach projects. The Old Deerfield Craft Fairs (http://www.deerfield-craft.org/) are major fundraisers, supporting all aspects of the organization's work.

The designs on this crown are copied from traditional Iroquois headpieces. Robin Kanseniiostah Delaronde designed the pink and light blue raised beadwork flowers and white beaded swirls after studying 18th and 19th century examples on display in the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Kahnawake. Delaronde is a Kanien’kehaka Mohawk in the Wolf clan and taught herself beading. https://americancenturies.org/collection/1993-10-01/

European explorers and settlers of the 16th and 17th centuries did not discover a “New World.” Indigenous people, in fact, have inhabited the region we now call “New England” for more than 12,000 years, since the glaciers retreated. Europeans who came to these shores encountered Indigenous peoples whose cultures reflected ancient and ongoing relationships with the land.
