Much progress has been made on PVMA’s African Americans in Rural New England database project! You can browse the site of over 2,800 18th century entries from documents, including account books, church, medical, and military records, etc., from Deerfield and surrounding towns here. We are also researching and writing biographies to provide a snapshot of the web of community that demonstrates the interconnectivity of the enslavers, enslaved people, freed African Americans, and those who profited from the labor of the enslaved. Updates will continue as funds allow. Additionally, we are partners with 10 Million Names – a collaborative project with American Ancestors dedicated to recovering the names of the estimated ten million men, women, and children of African descent who were enslaved in pre-and post-colonial America (specifically, the territory that would become the United States) between the 1500s and 1865. https://aane.deerfield-ma.org/

This doily was embroidered by a member of the Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework of Deerfield, Massachusetts. Members were inspired by designs from the colonial past. The society was active during the national Arts and Crafts Movement when an increasingly industrialized nation encouraged many people to prefer handcrafted items over those mass-produced in factories. https://americancenturies.org/collection/nbw-074/

Porcelain tea sets, made for export in China, were not common in rural towns in America in the early 19th century. English wares were less expensive and more available. This sugar bowl with cover is part of a tea set owned by Rhoda Smith of Northfield, Massachusetts, who married Henry Bardwell of Deerfield, Massachusetts, in 1807. Decorated with small pink enamel flowers and with a litchi nut as the finial on the cover, the sugar bowl and its accompanying tea things were the height of fashion.https://americancenturies.org/collection/1897-02-02/
