Little Orphan Annie wasn’t just a comic strip—she was a trailblazer! Born in the funny pages on August 5, 1924, Annie quickly captured hearts and became one of the most popular syndicated comic strips in America. By 1930, she made the leap to radio, becoming the first nationally broadcast children’s program with a child as the main character. Competing with male-led shows like Buck Rogers and Captain Midnight, Annie stood out as a bold heroine, smashing gender stereotypes while taking on bad guys and even supporting the war effort during World War II.

The Little Orphan Annie radio show didn’t just entertain—it revolutionized marketing to kids! Sponsored by Ovaltine, the program introduced clever product tie-ins, like the famous decoder pin, to captivate young listeners. Fans could mail in Ovaltine labels to receive decoder pins, which allowed them to unlock secret messages during the show. These messages teased upcoming episodes, creating excitement and building loyalty. Every year, new badges were issued, encouraging kids to keep collecting. The decoder pin remains one of the most iconic premiums of the golden age of radio. 🎙️🔐

On Tuesday, 12/31/24, we’re closing early at 3 PM.
We’ll have self-guided tours that day, so swing by and end 2024 at the House from A Christmas Story!

✨We’ll be closed on New Year’s Day but will reopen on 1/2/25 at 10 AM with guided tours.
Regular hours will resume: 10 AM to 5 PM, with the last tour starting at 4:15 PM.
