MRPS Membership is 100% volunteer, including our Board and Officers. We are from every age, profession, background and Skill level. Some of us volunteer at the Roundhouse; some simply support what we are doing through their Membership dues. But there is one thing we all have in common: the determination to preserve the equipment and facilities of Northeast Ohio railroading past.
These new Grand Trunk Western 4070 tee shirts are now available through the Midwest Railway Preservation Society website at https://midwestrailway.org. The graphic appears on the front. Adult sizes medium through XL are $25, sizes 2XL and 3XL are $30 before sales tax. All profits from the sale of these shirts benefit the 4070 Restoration Fund.
The cab is in the shop after it has been sandblasted. Next we will be using a heat resistant primer on it. Then some more metal work before we paint it with black heat resistant paint. Stay tuned.

A second night of investigations sponsored by 2Realm Paranormal has been added to the schedule! The Historic B&O Roundhouse will host this investigation on Saturday October 14th. The event will begin at 9:00 PM and run until at 2:00 AM. Tickets are through advance sale only and will not be available at the door. An interesting letter was delivered to our mailbox recently. It was sent by Michael Adair of Sterling Heights, Michigan and it contained two 35mm slides that were taken by his father, Edward, in 1960. Edward Adair was an engineer on the Grand Trunk Western Railroad and the subject of the slides were the last two steam locomotives that ran in service on the GTW. Our own 4070 is shown at the Rochester, Michigan Depot on the day of its' last run, on March 29, 1960. Locomotive 6323, the last steam locomotive on the railroad's active roster is shown on the other slide sometimes before its' last run, on September 20, 1961. That engine ran passenger excursions for the railroad in Michigan until that date. Thanks to Michael for sharing this photographic history.

August 30th will mark the 80th anniversary of the horrific accident near Wayland, New York that resulted in the deaths of 28 people in the Nickle Plate Railroad passenger car No. 62. Acquired by our predecessor, the Midwest Railway Historical Foundation in 1960, we have been the stewards of the Pullman coach ever since. Today, the car famously known as "the Death Car", is being prepped for major restoration that will keep it at the Historic B&O Roundhouse in Cleveland, Ohio for a couple of years. The story of the train wreck and the events leading up to it will be shared on our website as a blog post. Watch for it at www.midwestrailway.org
Midwest Railway Preservation Society is proud to announce that we have been awarded a $10,000 grant from The Frohring Foundation to be used for restoration of our Pullman sleeper, CTVX 1, Mt. Baxter. Those funds added to previous grants received from the John H. Emery Rail Heritage Trust and the National Railway Historical Society will enable us to complete the project. The current focus is to complete the weld repairs on the body and then re-install the wooden windows before sand-blasting and applying the finish paint.
A lot of activity at the roundhouse today as volunteers made progress on a few projects. Stall 4 was the place to be as the radial arm drill press was undergoing preliminary cleaning while crews continued to remove studs on both sides of 4070. Parked over the pit at the end of stall 4, the Drott was the object of attention, while the garage door at the end of stall 3 was having an accordion style security gate installed.
A new addition to stall 4 of the roundhouse is a radial arm drill press. Adjacent to GTW 4070, this valuable piece of machinery will come in handy for many aspects of her restoration. Volunteers will soon be busy cleaning and inspecting it to ready it for service.
Join 2Realm Paranormal Research on Friday October 13th for a ghost hunt at the Historic B&O Roundhouse. Investigations will take place in the roundhouse and on the infamous "Death Car", featured on many "haunted" cable TV broadcasts. Tickets are limited and will not be available at the door but can be bought through the link on our website on the calendar or events page.

What happened here?
Education and training. Those are important aspects of our Mission. After a few unsuccessful attempts to remove a broken stud, success was finally achieved. With broken studs on four faces of the cylinders, training was held to facilitate forming multiple crews to work simultaneously to complete removal of studs.
The open house that was scheduled for Sunday September 3rd has been re-scheduled for Sunday September 10th. Watch for more details on our website and pages. We hope to see you there!
Volunteers began work to repair the coupling housing on one of our trackmobiles yesterday while others worked on removing broken studs from one of 4070's cylinders.
Garrett Weider completed one of the E8's. Soon the last two pieces of equipment will get their artwork. This way when people walk on the towpath trail lookout they will get to see all of the nice murals.
We wish to congratulate the Berea Depot on their 6th year anniversary. Stop in to grab something to eat and watch the trains go by. You will also see a lot of the items we have on loan to them that are on display. Tell them MRPS sent you.

If you have not been to the roundhouse in awhile you will be amazed at the progress we have made inside and out in the rail yard. Come to our open house tomorrow, Sunday June 25th, to enjoy a short train ride on NKP90, tour the facility and see for yourself. The (in)famous Death Car will be open to tour and you can see the graffiti art painted equipment moved from their display recently on Quincy Avenue. Doors open at 11:00 AM and close at 4:00 PM. Midwest was the first stop on a bus tour yesterday that originated in central Pennsylvania. The visitors enjoyed their time at the roundhouse and were very complimentary, encouraging the organization to"keep up the good work!". Many of the visitors promised to follow our progress through our website.

A Track has been completed and a few of our cars have been moved alongside the dock. Occupying new space in the yard are the power car CTVX 4412 and CTVX 62. Our parking lot has also been cleared and leveled, opening up many more spaces.

The last of our six classes for the Institute of Learning in Retirement at Baldwin -Wallace University was presented as a tour of the Historic B&O Roundhouse and rail yard this afternoon. It was a great day with beautiful weather. MRPS thanks the ILR for asking us to present this class and look forward to possibly working together again in the future.

MPRX 6 is alive!
765 came through Clark Yard today to pick up our power car, CTVX 4412 this afternoon. It is on an extended lease to the Ft. Wayne Railroad Historical Society. The power car is last in the consist.

America is on its way east on the Lakeshore limited.
We power washed stall 4 to clean out the dirt and grime and to our surprise we found that the pit had been painted white. We will soon add lights in the pit so that we will be able to see better while working under 4070 making it a safer place to work. This will get us one step closer to bringing in 4070 to begin work on the frame.

Although our primary focus has been finishing the America business car for its' imminent departure, there has been progress in other areas as well. The motor and transmission for the Drott are getting nearer to installation.
After many months of hard work and donations the Drott motor is alive. This will be going into the crane that will be an important part in the restoration and repair of 4070. Thanks for all those that donated to the tire fund of the towmotor. The extra money went to buy the parts needed for this project also.
Excavation began around the turntable today so we can replace the original clay drain tiles that at one time drained the turntable. Efforts have been ongoing the past few years to trace the sewer lines throughout the yard and unclog them. The flooding problem seems to stem from a collapsed tile between the turntable and the sand pit. Once we find the problem, new larger diameter PVC piping will replace the clay tiles and hopefully we will no longer need to run sump pumps to keep the turntable dry. Lake Midwest should dry up and ice skating in the pit will be a thing of the past.
The new basement for Falls Junction is getting closer to completions. In the next few weeks we will then lower the building on to it's new foundation.
Over the last few weeks we have been preparing to move Falls Junction Depot off of Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad property to Pettibone Park in the Village of Glenwillow. In the next few weeks the building will be sitting on it's new foundation. Having been moved twice before, hopefully the third time is the charm.
So after a long week of late nights worth of filming. The crew asked if I would let them ring the bell. I said why not the whistle of 4070 instead. So as you can see they enjoyed the heck out of it. The guy in the film was the producer of the show.
