CHULA VISTA OTAY RANCH LIBRARY AWARDED AS PASSPORT FACILITY

The Otay Ranch Branch of the Chula Vista Public Library has been chosen as the 2017 National Passport Acceptance Facility of the Year by the U.S. Department of State. It was selected from over 7,500 passport acceptance facilities in the nation.

In two years, the Otay Ranch facility has processed over 33,000 passport applications and 16,000 passport photos. Passport agents at the facility offer 30 hours of service weekly including evening and weekend hours. Known as a welcoming and “hassle-free” environment, applicants have praised the passport agents at the facility as being knowledgeable and responsive. This contributed to the U.S. Department of State recognizing the Otay Ranch facility as one that goes above and beyond to educate customers applying for passports through the library’s website, offering convenient hours, photos, walk-in service and weekend passport fairs.

Passport services are available Monday, Friday, and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 1 to 6 p.m. Call (619) 397-5740 for more information or go to http://www.chulavistaca.gov/departments/library/services/passports .

Betty Waznis, who is retiring as the City of Chula Vista’s Library Director on December 15, was feted with a surprise retirement party at the Civic Center Library branch on Friday, December 8. The Friends of the Chula Vista Library and the Chula Vista Public Library Foundation sponsored the evening event. A good time was had by all! Betty’s daughter surprised her by flying in from North Carolina for the event. We all had Betty face fans, enjoyed wonderful food provided by the Foundation, and sat amongst Dr. Seuss-themed decorations. The Library staff did an outstanding job arranging this very special event for a very special Betty! Over 100 people were in attendance, representing members from her service clubs, Altrusa and Rotary, family, staff, former co-workers, and current and former City employees

"HITCHCOCK"

Anthony Hopkins cuts a masterful figure as the director, artist and con-man Alfred Hitchcock in this larkish tale of lust, jealousy and betrayal. Hitchcock defies the odds, the studios and his wife (Helen Mirren) to put Norman Bates and the film “Psycho” on screen. Co-starring Scarlett Johansen and Toni Collette. 2013. 98 minutes. PG -13. South Chula Vista Library’s Fragrant Garden Rededicated

On Wednesday, October 18, 2017, the fragrant garden was officially renamed the Betsty Cory Native Plant Garden, in memory of Ms. Cory, who was a long-time member of the Chula Vista Garden Club. The garden was rededicated on the one-year anniversary of her passing. She served as president of the garden club, was an active member of the California Native Plant Society, and a supporter of various environmental causes.

The Chula Vista Garden Club maintains the fragrant garden, the courtyard garden, and entry garden at the South Chula Vista Library branch, the outdoor planters and native plant areas at the Civic Center Library branch, as well as the memorial garden at Veteran’s Park. They applied for and received a California Native Plant Society grant to add native plants to the fragrant garden in 2012.

Sandy Duncan, a member of the garden club and good friend of Ms. Cory arranged the dedication and lunch, working closely with Principal Librarian Stephanie Loney and South Chula Vista Library branch manager Debbie Taylor. Over 25 people were in attendance, including many garden club members, Ms. Cory’s daughter, Robin, Library Director Betty Waznis, former mayor Cheryl Cox, and Friends of the Library president Shauna Stokes. Ms. Duncan and three other garden club members spoke at the event. Ms. Duncan asked that people consider planting a native plant in their yard in Ms. Cory’s memory. Colorful tables, brightly painted by the public and library staff, and paid for by the South Chula Vista Library Friends, were provided.
