Tightly sealed or an unfastened mind? Evoke Gallery returns for the fall season and we ask the question: What happens when someone/something is isolated? The sealed jar in the dark corner abandoned in your pantry, or the wise madman who resides on the mountain, existing in a self contained space, impervious to outside influence. Whether it grows, decays, mutates, or simply holds still, it’s a transformation that needs no witnesses, until now.

Some nights remind you why you do this work. For the opening reception of Cumbia Sin Fronteras, cumbia filled every corner of Evoke, not just as music, but as memory, as movement, as identity. We had the profound honor of hosting .artcollective for an exhibition that moved us in ways we needed! This show has 51 artists, local voices and international ones, all in one room! We watched people dance who hadn’t danced in years. We watched strangers become family over a shared rhythm. We watched a documentary premiere that made the room go quiet in the best way.

To every artist who poured their soul into this, thank you for all that you do. To everyone who traveled from out of town just to be here, that means everything to us. To every hand that helped set up, break down, and hold it all together, we cannot thank you enough! “La Cumbia te cura mi amor”!

This is why we open these doors, this is why art is important!. Thank you, Ruidosa. Thank you, all 51 artists. From Chicago with love! ❤️

This Saturday join us for the closing reception for Promise(d) + an Artist Talk! The opening was so magical from Nancy’s beautiful performance to the high vibrations in the air! Curated by Teddy Sandler (.tdy), this exhibition combines a revisionist history and speculative storytelling to re-contextualize what being alive in America could mean.

all these works are tied around an exploration of what is lost and promised in the current moment. Artists address this across painting, sculpture, and activated performances, providing an attempt to speculate, meditate, and materially reorient towards the future.

Promise(d) is opening its pages! & are producing a companion zine to the current exhibition curated by Teddy Sandler (.tdy), and we want writers like you to be apart of it! We’re looking for poets, essayists, critics, and experimenters!

If the work on these walls moved something in you, or if you’ve been sitting with questions about cultural mythology, broken promises, and what we dare to imagine next, this is your invitation.

The publication unfolds in three movements: what was promised? What is a promise? And what can we promise?
