Doro Böhme 1957-2020

We are deeply saddened to announce that former longtime SAIC Special Collections Librarian Doro Böhme passed away on Friday, March 25, 2020. She was a beautiful life force and made what we do in the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection possible by building both a significant collection and a vital community in her twenty years of work in the JFABC and John M. Flaxman Library.

Doro left the Library in May of 2019 to pursue her creative practice. She focused most of her creative energy on writing, fiction mostly, but she was also an accomplished photographer. Much like her daily work in the library, Doro was able to find and bring curious oddities to light in her poetic practice. She touched so many in her life from the SAIC community to strangers in the city to artists and publishers all over the world. While we mourn Doro’s passing, we also celebrate her beautiful life.

We send our deepest condolences to Doro’s family. There will not be a service during this strange time in history, but hope we can make a memorial through shared memories.

From Melanie Emerson, Dean of the Library and Special Collections at SAIC:

"I am so sorry to share this heartbreaking news. Doro passed away this afternoon. She was a wonderful soul with so much energy and passion for her work and life. The world is less vibrant without her, but her work lives on and will continue to touch so many at SAIC and beyond.

Her husband Kevin created a tribute video of Doro, which was shot mostly in Bavaria last summer- "her favorite place on the planet."

Doro Böhme passed away today (March 20th, 2020) shortly after 2:00 pm at home with her daughter Klara and husband Kevin. This short tribute is for all who kn...
