Savkud Workshop
WORKSHOP IS OPEN TO O'OTHAM MALES ADULTS (18+)
This workshop introduces the fundamentals and cultural significance of making a savkud (gourd rattle), a key instrument in O’otham singing. Participants will learn gourd preparation, handle-making, and may optionally join sessions to collect raw materials like gourds and cactus ribs. Classroom activities include interactions with O’otham singers sharing their experiences in crafting sa'savkud and learning traditional songs. Each participant will create their own savkud to keep.
Note: Due to cultural practices, only males may construct the gourd rattle, though others are welcome to attend with male relatives.

The contemporary art exhibit will showcase the complexity of Indigenous artists living in America in the 21st century. The photos will be displayed together to highlight the unique cultural experience of Indigenous Arizonians.

Join our Collections staff this Saturday, June 13th, at the District 5 Service Center for their third installment of “Caring for Your Cultural Memories”.

From 1pm to 2:30pm, the Collections team will be giving tips and tricks on how to preserve your baskets, pottery and even traditional clothing. Don’t hesitate to stop by with any questions you might have for them!
