Check out the video game-based art piece, “Unskippable Dialogue” by Alison Faygo in “Is There Wi-Fi in Heaven? Grieving in the Digital Age” at Vision Gallery. The art piece is uniquely set up, as the piece includes car auto parts and portable DVD players for the 3D animated videos to play. Two videos converse with one another: once played together, steadily unsynchronized over time. A road-trip never taken, daydreams that reference a past so distant it comprises a sort of liminal space in the mind.

“The title ‘Unskippable Dialogue’ references the video game mechanic of the same name where players are forced to sit through dialogue sequences before progressing. While often a source of frustration and interruption of flow state for players, these pauses frequently conceal the necessary loading before the next scene. What appears as narrative delay is in fact a threshold, a moment where the system quietly prepares what comes next.”

Take a look of the art “Screen Play” by Mike Foster Estes, presently in Vision Gallery’s current exhibit, ‘Is There Wi-Fi in Heaven? Grieving in the Digital Age.” Mikey Foster Estes’ work adds to the idea of how digital text messages from loved ones may not replace their spirit.

“Mikey Foster Estes’ work brings the fleeting nature of digital communication into a physical form. Drawing from messages exchanged with his late mother, along with memories of visiting her office job in the ‘90s, he uses continuous, perforated printer paper to create a sort of unbroken poem of their communication.

What would normally disappear into a screen is given embodiment, transforming their conversations from the final years of her life into something that can be touched and held.”

Explore the art piece “Lossy” by Samantha Aasen in the exhibit, “Is There Wi-Fi in Heaven?” located at Vision Gallery. The art piece is a reference to GeoCities, a free web hosting service, that allowed users to create personal websites in the 1990s and 2000s. Aasen explains more about GeoCities as:

“These early websites often blended fan pages, blogs, poetry, artwork, and family newsletters—forming a distinctly personal and expressive digital landscape.

Today, Internet Archive provides access to this early web through tools like Wayback Machine and GifCities. By searching keywords, users can navigate and rediscover these digital artifacts.”

Have you seen “Ghost” by Rembrandt Quiballo in “Is There Wi-Fi in Heaven? Grieving in the Digital Age?” at Vision Gallery? This art piece includes archival footage of the 1970s protest in the Philippines during a period of political unrest. The video reflects on the lost protestors’ lives, but also the ongoing mourning as media and memories of these events fade.

“Like much of Quiballo’s work, Ghost reflects on how our mass media is destabilized by contemporary technologies of circulation and preservation. As images are reproduced, compressed, and reframed across time and new technology, they risk becoming spectral and ghost-like in their own respect.”

Have you seen Alison Auditore’s insanely intricate drawings in “Is There Wi-Fi in Heaven? Grieving in the Digital Age” at Vision Gallery? Through a technique called stippling, Auditore makes thousands of little marks on a page to create incredible portraits. All those tiny little dots are imperative to the work.

“In contrast to the immediacy of social media, Allison Auditore’s ink stippling portraits hold space for a more sustained and interior experience of grief. They suggest an alternative to the noise of online and social mourning, where feeling is not broadcast or compressed, but accumulated gradually over time, mark by mark”

Take a look at Regan Henley’s profound artworks in the exhibit, “Is There Wi-Fi in Heaven? Grieving in the Digital Age” at Vision Gallery. Highlighting some of Regan Henley works include “Visiting You” and “Film, Vine, Halo, Aperture, Spotlight, Staircase, Jordan Blue, and Jordan Green” from the series “File Not Found”

“Film, Vine, Halo, Aperture, Spotlight, Staircase, Jordan Blue, and Jordan Green” from the series “File Not Found” is an art piece that explores memory and how it changes through over the years. Henley explains this piece is, “an exploration into how precious memories of our loved ones change in our brains over time using digital corruption and code editing of original photographs of a deceased friend. The precious photographs are purposefully corrupted within their code with messages to the deceased, resulting in the abstract and glitchy images you see before you. These interventions transform the photographs into something literally and figuratively unstable, as if memory itself were slipping, pixel by pixel, into abstraction. Once transferred to glass, the original photograph is destroyed, leaving the new glass print as the only evidence, as a metaphor for the ever-changing nature of memory, even precious ones.”

“Visiting You” is meant to be an artwork that, “takes the audience on a cemetery walk by using satellite imagery and on-site audio to digitize the real-life ritual of the cemetery visit. In a time when so much of our relationships are shaped by technology, the piece asks what it means to show up for someone who is gone. If we can connect, remember, and even grieve across distance, was being physically present ever the most important part”
