✨ Frieze Seoul opens in two days! For this year’s Focus Sector we are presenting a solo presentation by Dresden-based painter Johanna Seidel. ✨

Seidel’s practice has long been concerned with the nature of perceived realities, weaving symbols from mythology, dreams, and daily life into poetic, atmospheric canvases. Trained at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden (MFA), she has exhibited widely across Europe and the United States, including recent solo shows at CLC Gallery Venture (Beijing), Galerie Laetitia Gorsy (Leipzig), and Gaa (New York, Cologne) and solo presentations at Liste Art Fair (Basel) and Frieze Seoul (Seoul). Her first solo institutional exhibition opens at Städtische Galerie Dresden in September.

For the Focus sector of Frieze Seoul 2026, Gaa Gallery is pleased to present a solo presentation of new paintings by Johanna Seidel (b. 1993, Dresden).

In her latest body of work, Seidel explores the tension between freedom and foreboding that defines the height of summer. Drawing on the atmospheric intensity of heatwaves—their hallucinatory shimmer and the paradox of drought-stricken grasses as early as June—she constructs a visual language that oscillates between naive and realist figuration, between drawing and painting.

Gaa is thrilled to announce our participation in the 2026 edition of Frieze Seoul opening in September with a solo presentation of German painter Johanna Seidel.

Rooted in an ongoing interest in duality and transformation, Seidel’s work explores the tension between lived experience and imagined realities, using metamorphosis as both subject and narrative device. Seidel’s paintings emerge from her interest in perceived realities, where symbols from history, mythology, dreams, and everyday life intermingle.

We look forward to welcoming you to our booth in the Focus Section. The fair opens with a VIP Preview on Wednesday, September 2 and remains open to visitors through September 5, 2026. Please email [email protected] for more information
