NEW ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | DAVID UNDERWOOD

David Underwood doesn’t just take photographs, he builds them. Blending silver gelatin prints, cyanotypes, and hand stamped text into layered mixed media works, his pieces live in 16 museum collections nationwide, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum. After 35 years teaching photography in the Tennessee foothills, David brings decades of darkroom mastery and a deep reverence for the American landscape to Gallery MAR. We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome him!

Wendy Chidester’s opening was a full house and it’s easy to see why. Objects nobody thought about twice, suddenly impossible to look away from.

That’s the magic of it.

Coffee in hand. No agenda. Just you and a room full of forgotten objects looking better than they have in decades.

Wendy Chidester’s work remembers what we forgot. Come see what comes back to you at Gallery MAR Carmel.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | SARAH WINKLER

Sarah Winkler paints the land from the inside out.
Born in Manchester, England, she grew up in Malawi and Brunei before landing in the United States, where she studied Art and Earth Science at William Paterson University in New Jersey. That pairing was not accidental. Her studio now sits at 9,000 feet in the Colorado Rockies, and when she paints, she mixes crushed rock and ground water collected in the field directly into her work. The earth in her paintings is literally the earth she is painting.

Her large scale layered landscapes are about time, geology, and the deep history of a place. She thinks of herself as an abstract painter working in a landscape motif, chasing the essence and emotion of a place rather than its surface appearance. Named by ARTSY as one of the top Women Painters on the Rise, her work has been exhibited through the US Department of State’s Art in Embassies program and lives in over 100 collections worldwide.

She puts it simply: “I’m opting for the essence, emotion and impression of a place instead of reality.”

Sarah’s latest work is now on our walls at Gallery MAR, and it’s even more captivating in person. We hope you’ll stop in and spend some time with these breathtaking landscapes.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | LAURA WAIT

Some artists paint what they see. Laura Wait paints what language feels like.

Born in Canada and raised in Boulder, Colorado, Laura studied art history before making her home and studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She recently settled on Vashon Island, Washington, a move from the warmth and expansive skies of the Southwest to the cool coastal light of the Pacific Northwest.

That sense of movement and energy lives in her work. Laura transforms words into visual language, layering letterforms, symbols, and calligraphic marks until meaning gives way to rhythm. Drawing inspiration from music, modern graffiti, and even the invisible forces of wave energy, her paintings invite intuition rather than interpretation. They are less about reading and more about feeling.

We’ve also just welcomed a new work from this remarkable artist, an opportunity to experience their evolving vision in person.

Stop in, slow down, and experience the conversation beyond words. Gallery MAR Carmel is open and waiting…
